The Moz chimed in with some strong words...

Celebrating my birthday in Manchester as news of the Manchester Arena bomb broke. The anger is monumental.
For what reason will this ever stop?

Theresa May says such attacks "will not break us", but her own life is lived in a bullet-proof bubble, and she evidently does not need to identify any young people today in Manchester morgues. Also, "will not break us" means that the tragedy will not break her, or her policies on immigration. The young people of Manchester are already broken - thanks all the same, Theresa. Sadiq Khan says "London is united with Manchester", but he does not condemn Islamic State - who have claimed responsibility for the bomb. The Queen receives absurd praise for her 'strong words' against the attack, yet she does not cancel today's garden party at Buckingham Palace - for which no criticism is allowed in the Britain of free press. Manchester mayor Andy Burnham says the attack is the work of an "extremist". An extreme what? An extreme rabbit?
In modern Britain everyone seems petrified to officially say what we all say in private. Politicians tell us they are unafraid, but they are never the victims. How easy to be unafraid when one is protected from the line of fire. The people have no such protections.

Try telling that to Jo Cox's family. Not sure what Morrissey is really getting at here.

Isn't this the same guy who supported Argentina's invasion of the Falklands.........

Gives the police more powers/resources to call upon (including the Army).

That is what it usually means, but there was a lot of very odd wording in that statement -

May says armed police who usually protect places like parliament will be replaced by members of the armed forces.

That isn't what happened on the two previous occasions when the threat level was raised to critical.

Edit: I removed a cynical comment which should be in the other thread.

The last time we were 'critical' was 2007, this plan was only drawn up after the Paris attacks.

But from what I remember, armed forces replace armed police guards at key 'targets', freeing up armed police to guard less high-profile 'targets' (sporting events, concerts etc).

That is what she said will happen - but aside from Parliament (at least whilst its closed), some Embassies and the Palaces, there isn't really that much more of a police response that they can replace in order that it can be freed up to do other things. Almost all of that is in central London as well, where there is a much higher number of armed officers already (certainly than compared to the rest of the country).

I could understand it if she was authorizing the army to help out county forces, especially given where this attack occurred and the relative strength of the police in those areas, or if she was announcing troops on the streets patrolling with police (which is what most of the French Vigipirate patrols are IIRC), but to replace the Police isn't something that makes the clearest sense at present.
