Meanwhile, it looks increasingly likely that Luke Garbutt will not be at Everton next season – and I understand the situation.
It’s not about the contract, it’s purely about playing opportunities.

Once a young player has had a taste of first team football he doesn’t want to find himself back on the subs bench again. The problem Garbutt has is that he has his country’s left-back standing in his way.Kevin Richardson had the same problem at Everton. No matter how well he had played – and that was usually very well – I always had to tell him ‘I’m sorry Kev, but Kevin Sheedy is fit.’

Richo subsequently left Everton and went on to have an excellent career, winning title medals at Arsenal.
Yeah, but only after playing well over a hundred games and helping Everton to success. He stayed and fought for his time in the team (as did the likes of Harper). Not a very appropriate parallel from HK there.

You cannot blame the lad if he wants to play regular football.

We slag players off who are happy to take money off a club and sit on a bench all season.

If he is as good as Baines was at the same age and progresses as well, it will look a horrendous thing to do if he is let go and turns out to be a star. Unfortunately we don't have that hindsight, so it's either him or Baines for next season and Martinez obviously isn't convinced.

I'd like him to stay, but if he goes then it's nothing drastic. He looks a good prospect, however that's all he is up to now - a future prospect.

Some people may criticise the club for letting a potential talent slip through their grasps, as when he has played he's appeared competent.

Yet, if it's purely for footballing reasons then you cannot blame the lad. Only hindsight will tell if it would be the correct decision to leave.

Even if it's slightly tinged by financial demands (which I doubt it is based on reports), then so what? He's not a local lad. He's not an Evertonian.

If somewhere offers him the same prospect as ourselves (the chance to quite often sit on the bench) and more money, then why not?

I'd love him to stay, and deep down I think he still may, but let's just wait and see. However, I find it strange less teams are sniffing around.

Either it's almost certain he'll eventually sign (playing hard to get), or he's not all that.

I think for his career he is doing the right thing if he goes to a club where he will play every week.

I just don't think he will ever hit the heights that some people think he will. I don't think he is good enough.
Premiership player...yes,probably. Premiership top player...unlikely.

But those aren't the only two options. Martinez should be moving heaven and earth to convince him to sign for us and agree to be loaned out to another prem club for regular game time. It's not like the league is awash with top-class left backs.

Garbutt's problem is that not only is Leighton Baines in front of him, but a fully fit Bryan Oviedo probably is too.

If it was just Baines, I imagine Garbutt would have signed on willingly for at least another two years, with plenty of first team opportunities coming his way and the very real possibility the position would be his as Baines started to wind down.

And now it seems there is a possibility Bobby is thinking Galloway can play at left back so that is another thing he has to consider.

So I can't really fault him for seeking first team football elsewhere.

Good luck, Luke ;)

We don't know if Martinez is trying to convince him, there again the lad could be a knob.

Problem is theres talk on here that Liverpool, Man City and Spurs all want him and he'll get less of a chance playing at those teams than he would here, so if he went to any of those three you'd surely have to question his motives.

If he goes and plays for a team lower than us, say a Villa or a Bournemouth then fair play to the lad, but if he was to do that id rather he signed a new deal and we loaned him there.
