Yes, slavery was the norm at the time, but the people trying to use his philanthropy as a counter point (Donations made to hospitals & schools with money made through the slave trade BTW) is a horrible point to make.

These statues should be replaced like the relics of the era that they are. I'm not saying we should pretend these things didn't happen but there are better ways of educating people (The Slavery Museum at the Maritime Museum here in Liverpool is an excellent example and I encourage anyone who hasn't been, to go)

As one of my favorite comedians once said: "Tradition & heritage is mostly just dead peoples baggage, leave it in the past where it belongs"

I don’t believe he is trying to justify it, just referencing it. A bit like like getting rid of Auschwitz......it reminds people of the bad things that happened......

Auschwitz doesn't glorify the the Nazi regime who ran it - it has been repurposed into a museum to educate people as to what happened there (See my point about the Slavery Museum)

These statues do nothing to educate people and serve only to glorify the people depicted.

Just does my head in the amount of self loathing Brits who carry on like this place is some intolerant hell hole yet they are more than happy living here whilst saying so.

If you have nothing good to say about our history, culture or traditions then why not move elsewhere?

I'm not so sure. People understand these days and getting rid of Auschwitz completely and out of the educational minds of the young is no different than getting rid of a statue.....

My Jamaican mate who is in his 60's, overweight and has diabetes was put on shielding for 12 weeks at work.
He's got an apartment in Turkey that he owns.
When he said he wanted to get away and isolate there, I laughed.
No way Turkey has decent hospitals I said. You don't want to get ill there mate.

Clearly he knew best.

Maybe jogging on when you can is the way forward.
