Do you have some form of filter that allows you to read things that aren't actually written?

I haven't an issue with you btw mate everyone is entitled to an opinion - but this whole thing has shown the left up to be just as bad as the right RE this issue.

Had the peaceful protesters gave the minority causing bother a clip I would have had major respect as it would have shown they were not allowing their message to be lost to mindless thuggery - sadly that chance went and alot of people all around the world will now think "just an excuse to cause bother".

Considering the Left also were the loudest voices for the lockdown and Johnsons' lax actions they also seemingly are not arsed if thousands more die from the virus due to all this.

The left love the NHS - well why are they standing back and promoting protests which is putting an even bigger strain on already stretched emergency services - for all the people hurt in the protests and any future issues why should the NHS who are fighting COVID have to be stretched further with this?

Im pretty much centre left politically speaking but the left has let itself down these past couple of days and shown massive hypocrisy.

So lets just crack on with stuff basically? Pretend everything is fine.

You are not wrong to be fair, nothing means anything these days. Everything is pointless.
Don’t be a smart arse mate, I’m saying it’s done all wrong. Protest yes, organise it have an educated high profile spokesperson! I don’t know but something along them lines.

We that live around these parts are fully aware of the shame as well the benefits he brought, constantly reinforced by the local news coverage. This just feels like the twitter generation trying to clear their own conscience. Me I'd much rather they put another statue honouring the slaves right opposite his.
This would be an interesting solution too if possible. But I don't think statues of slavers (or others with an overwhelmingly grim legacy) should stand in isolation.

Obviously there's lots of people who don't, but not everyone. If a statue of Henry V makes people research medieval Britain, well that's not a bad thing.

There is no evidence that is what happens, though - it just makes people think their opinions are correct. Look at Richard I's equestrian statue in Parliament - why on earth is that there?

Left as bad as right nonsense. Not seen anyone drive cars into groups of demonstrators or anything close.
So you hate violence so much you’d have loved to have seen the left hit other people on the left?

That's all true and in reality I'm far from advocating removing it, however I do have issues with the blotting out of aspects of history and the legacy they leave.

Where does it stop? James Penny, a slave-ship owner, had a street named after him in Liverpool, which some band then used as a name for a track of theirs.

History is often signified by how relevant it is in the human consciousness or today's zeitgiest; this is why places like Auschwitz are maintained or other memorials.

If you travel around Eastern Europe, there's multiple relics of a system that is now defunct and quite often despised, but they're left as a mark to remember.

Most are good but some are bad, but they're a part of the fabric of history. For me, the statue isn't a celebration of slavery but an artefact or source linked to it.

@Tubey mentioned it earlier that people now look back on history and believe that our morals inherently match those of the time, when in reality they do not.
I think that is probably where we disagree as I don’t think removing statues from public squares blot out history (especially if they are removed to a museum which is my preferred place) I’d rather say it just stops emphasizing one particular aspect of it.

I’ll admit my views on this have changed a lot on this since I moved to the US - a huge amount of the Confederate monuments were put up during Jim Crow and whilst ostensibly used to “teach history and honor our ancestors“ were really a non subtle “we’re still in charge” mesaage .

I was half joking when I mentioned flower displays earlier but if teaching history was really what these statues provide how about instead a regularly changed exhibit by local schoolchildren on local people/places that rotates between different schools?

You want the peaceful protestors to fight the violent elements of the protest/looters?
