My grandfather was a red, but god knows what he would make of the crowd at Analfield these days.

He worked for English Electric, shop steward, and Labour Party member and season ticket for the Kemlyn Road stand.

;) All four of his son's (including my dad) were rabid blues.

The demographics of the crowd, at the RS, both Manchester clubs, and the big ones in London, has changed beyond all recognition.

More people are flying in for games and staying the weekend.

Look at crowd pictures, up to the 1980's, and it was white, male, and obviously working class.

This is all now long gone, and maybe it's for the better.
Not having a go at you old sport, but I have to raise two points about your last sentence:

1. The game has been stolen from the working class, few of whom can now afford to go to the game, by billionaire media moguls.

2. How the hell is thousands of people FLYING in for 90 minutes entertainment better?

The environment is being destroyed by these idiots. I used to say the same to the doe-eyed idiots in our staff room who would burst with excitement at the prospect of flying the Atlantic to New York to spend a weekend shopping in the same ruddy chain stores. Theyd just grin and say I was being a kill-joy. I'd just grin back and say they were just being self-centred self-appeasing idiots with no comprehension of the chemical imbalance their actions cause to a vulnerable environmental and social mechanism.

It's ruddy insanity.

You're right on all counts, but I bet you were a right blast in the staff room if those were your exact words. lol

When the BR family goes to Goodison we fly in!!

Mind you it was two overnight ferry trips in a row back in the 70s and 80s when I was first travelling.

Probably would be a bad time to admit that I regularly drive to away games then...

That's inevitable I guess. Have to say that what stops me going to a match is the fact that it isn't local. I have this unwritten rule in my head that if I travel more than 30 miles it has to be an overnighter to make it worth while. Over 70 miles then a week. I just like to leave a minimum footprint. I'm not an eco-warrior, I'm just quietly aware that the planet and its resources aren't ours to exhaust, we are just borrowing them for a few years.

The onus really is on governments to make public transport cheaper and more efficient

You're looking at something like £60-90 if you want to get a train from the North West to watch a game in London

I saved a bit of money this season by getting the Mega Bus down in the morning and then getting the train back in the evening, but for most other away's I usually always drive, mainly because it's cheaper and in some cases it's even more time effective

It doesn't help that SKY and BT keep moving the kick off times around, sometimes a couple weeks out from the actual game, meaning it's sometimes impossible to book an early train because you don't know if they're going to switch the schedule on you

I also try and do my bit for the environment by recycling where I can, using echo settings on everything, trying to eat more vegetables etc. Climate change deniers wind me up no end. It's just childish to me, kind of like closing your eyes and putting your fingers in your ears going "LALALALALALALALALALA I'M NOT LISTENING" when you know you've lost an argument

I agree totally. Public transport prices, especially trains, are obscene in this country. But what does one expect while government see them as cash cows for their elite mate owners?

Be careful what you wish for - it is not in the nature of British governments to step in and protect its people from explotation. They'll never act to make public transport cheaper, they'll simply tax private transport more to make the public form appear better value.

Mikey the guy with a carbon footprint the size of a Yeti. ;)

I agree the climate is changing and everyone who is doing as you advocate is more conscious than those who are not but I don't really believe we have a say in it, don't think we ever have. Humans have proved as a race that we cannot live in harmony with nature. I think nature has consciously decided to get rid of the virus of the human race. Nature will correct itself as it has before and will be better off without us. Humans see themselves as the dominant evolved species and in being control of nature but that clearly isn't correct. What we are seeing is the beginning of the human extermination.
