Lewis Holtby

He's always looked reasonable when I've seen him. I'd be interested to know what we are able to spend in January. Could provide us a chance to kick on.

Are you assuming that Spurs and the RS are out because of his stated club alliegances? I think that's a stretch, like if so.

I don't think he'd go to Liverpool. I might be wrong but that's the impression I get.

And I don't think Spurs need him - Dembele etc. and would he feck nudge out Bale on the left. I rate Holtby but I think he's "second tier". Spurs have such a packed midfield of quality that he'd go there and "do a Pienaar" IMO.

His work rate and ability on the ball would go really well with our current set up. He's very much like Leon Osman in his style - really compact technique.

I think we have a great shot at bringing him in if he doesn't sign that extension - I can understand the media putting 1 and 1 together here.

You said he doesn't strike you as a City, Chelsea or United player because he's not 'at that level', but he's only 22, so i really don't see that being an issue.

Anyway, a Champions League player who is highly rated (apparently) won't go for £3m even if he does only have six months left. It simply wouldn't be worth it for them to sell him at that price, you might as well let the contract run down and use him to consolidate your league position and Champions League/Europa progress.

If he hadn't said his dad supported Everton we wouldn't even be discussing it, lets be honest.

Where did he say he supports Arsenal?

He doesnt, he as said before that he likes Arsenal for there style of play. Supports Everton or as a liking for them due to his Dad being from Liverpool and being a big Evertonian.

Schalke want to extend his deal and i wouldnt be surprised if he did but if there was any chance at all of getting Holtby, either cheap in Jan or on a free next summer, then i hope we seriously look into it cos he's class, and would give us summat different in the No. 10 role.

I don't get what you mean by the bold bit - when I say he's not at the level to play for those sides... well, I can't put it plainer than that really! Basically I don't think Man Utd, Chelsea or Manchester City will bid for him as he wouldn't be required - and I don't think Spurs need him.

He's been linked to Everton and Arsenal in the past and he won't move domestically within Germany - and he's publicly stated he wants to play in England.

So as I say... the media are putting 1 and 1 together and I can see why.

I think you're devaluing Everton quite a bit with what you've said there by the way. What other side in the Premier League barring those mentioned would have a better chance of landing him?

A team that would pay him more money per week.
A team that would pay Schalke more money.

I think you're putting way to much emphasis on a quote in which he also mentioned Arsenal. Like i said, if he'd never mentioned his dad supported Everton we wouldn't even be discussing it, and a lot more goes into a football transfer than what team you might follow.

The media aren't putting anything together, 'oh his contract his running out and he says he follows Everton, that must be a goer'. It's silly.

He's said he wants a move to England - fact. He has just a few months remaining on his contract - again, another fact.

So you aren't going to get a full fee for him. It's the reason we sold Pienaar on the cheap to Spurs for example. It depends entirely on the player and his role of course but they aren't going to get a full price for him in January, so if he were to go it'd be for a reduced fee.

He's not a superstar so I don't understand how you think we'd be priced out of the market automatically for him - how much do you think he'd go for?

Apart from the big three and Liverpool/Spurs, there's nobody else in England we couldn't reasonably compete with, and we managed to compete with Arsenal to all extents and purposes over Mirallas. At least, we put in a bid and a contract offer acceptable to him. We've done it with European starlets such as Fellaini in the past too.

I'm honestly not understanding your logic here. How is Holtby too big and unattainable for Everton?v

He may of course just sign a new contract and all this is a moot point but still!

I didn't say he was too big for Everton, i said other teams would be willing to pay him more or pay Schalke more.

Where has he said 'I want to move to England and nowhere else' ? Because unless he's said that he's basically just said what pretty much every footballer in world football thinks, which is 'i would like to play in the Premier League'. It doesn't mean anything at all.

And the figure you quoted, £3m for Holtby, would be the same that Spurs played for a player who was 6 years older.

Germany Under-21 captain Holtby, who has an English father, is currently in talks over a new deal with Schalke but has been linked with a move away from the Bundesliga, having earlier revealed that he wants to play in the Premier League "one day".
Speaking to Kicker, the 21-year-old has now said: "England will always remain an issue for me, but that is still a long way off. I will be playing for Schalke for at least one more year and that's what I focus on."

"I have always trained harder than requested by the clubs," he explained. "I am a young player and don't need to rest for four weeks. I'd go mad anyway. Specialised individual training was new to me but I have profited from it. I had looked at some of my weak points on DVD before. After all, I want to play on Champions League level this season."

He makes a point of saying he wants to play at Champions League level this year. Why would he go to a club who more than likely would be Europa at best ?

Interview of kinds here. Sh*te source but ah well.

Says he will be at Schalke at least one more year, wants a move to England and he wouldn't consider a domestic move.

I'm not saying he definitely will move to England but if his preference is England then it's one of twenty clubs basically and I think we'd have a shot.

And you didn't answer the question - how much do you think Holtby would go for with just six months of his contract remaining?

The same reason Mirallas left a Champions League club? :)

How much do i think he would go for ? I don't know. But Pienaar went for £3m and was 6 years older and wasn't a hot prospect who is playing in the Champions League.

In other words, i reckon he'd go for a fair bit more than the £3m you suggested.
