It was 1m down with loads of add ons.

Im willing to bet the add ons didnt include winning the U23 league with Everton.

We will get most of our money back with compo.

...it’s a good point actually and might explain the reluctance to give him game time (presume that’s one of the add-ons). I like the lad lots but I have no problem with this course of action if Brands doesn’t think he’ll be a first teamer for us.

Its not as easy as that.

Brands might think the lad has got potential, hes 19 years old, struggling to think of many lads his age that play CB in this league, of course most play fullback, we have our Captain there, a French world cup winning RB, the best LB in the league and erm, Leighton Baines. In the middle hes competing with 2 players who played in a world cup last year.

So its a case of waiting for his chance, but the lad doesnt want to wait, he wants to play, he knows its gonna take a lot for him to play here, so maybe he fancies trying his luck elsewhere? I admire the lad, he could sit on his arse and earn the dough, but instead hes backing himself to get games elsewhere.

Its just 1 of them things, nobodies fault, nobody is in the wrong.

Although I do find it strange we havent even approached him with an offer, cos if we dont even offer him anything, we dont get compo.

...but his current contract is up this summer.

I have no doubt he will be offered a new contract, after Dan Gosling I doubt that we will get caught like that again.
It just may be that he has decided he wants to move back to where his family live and he can earn as much from Newcastle as he can from Everton, of course for all we know he could be tying up a deal with Everton at the moment.... all we have heard are rumours about him leaving.
I don't see him being a regular starter at any Premiership club just yet. I doubt that Steve Bruce would risk his job just so that he can play a raw youngster at centre back in the premiership.

Was the lack of offering him a contract from Boyland in the Athletic mate?

It all seems a but odd the situation really. I can fully understand Gibson wanting to go somewhere where he can play more. To be quite frank for any young players 18-21 the opportunity to play in Germany/Lique 1 as a permanent transfer and get 2-3 years under your belt is far better than you will be offered for most PL teams. I can't fathom why we wouldn't have offered him a deal though.

There doesn't seem to have been any suggestion his attitude was off. He was spoken about glowingly at the back end of last season and did pretty well in pre-season. I'd imagine the club would be delighted with him. Maybe Brands wants to leave it later before committing to longer term contracts? He may have seen Garbutt and Galloway still on the books and felt we have to be more careful on deals? Hard to say.

Tbh, I don't blame him (or the club) at all. If he is sitting, say, on an offer from someone like Ajax, where he can see how young players can develop and then get cherry-picked by top European sides if they do well, then he is probably just as well to go for it rather than hang around doing a Championship loan or backing up first-team players who have a lot more experience and skills than he currently does.

It might not work out, in which case the worst that is likely to happen for him is that he can come back to the UK and work his way in with a Championship club again. Which to be fair is where he would likely be (on loan) if he stayed with us.

Who's the two?
Not that it means much, some awful players play at the world cup

There's obviously a lot to go in the saga so it's by no means final, but it certainly looks likely he will want to move elsewhere. You can't help but feel it's a bit of a kick in the nuts for Brands really, and he would add to a list of young players who for varying reasons we have been unable to keep.

Thats being said the conclusion to me is he is one of a number of players bought in 2017 in what was a completely botched recruitment drive. I do wonder had we have trusted our nerve and gone for a young, youth orientated coach (or someone like a Favre) how he might have been able to better capitalise on players such as Gibson, Lookman, Vlasic etc. Even to a degree lads like Bowler, Adeniran just haven't really been utilised. You do need a plan with younger players.

I hope we can keep him, I think he has something about him. I also think he'd settle in next to Mina as well. But we have to see I suppose. I can understand why Silva is reticent about putting him in there.
