Ultimately why he doesn't play much - cant be doing that in the PL too often without getting punished on the counter.

Got promise but needs a loan move really.

Did it at the end as well when we just needed to hold the ball. It’s what young players do but you get punished against better opposition.

He’s coming along just fine but of course it’s not enough for the yoof army who demand any kid they’ve heard of from the academy needs to be playing games.

How’s Thierry Small doing at Southampton btw?

I do completely understand your point, but given the context, the disparity in quality between DCL and then Rondón (and now Tosun) is just so great that the risks of giving Simms or Dobbin a run for 20 or so minutes are completely mitigated. For two immobile strikers, their hold-up play and interchanging is not even close to being up to scratch, which means the second balls come straight back to us and we're back under pressure immediately.

In a season where we won't be fighting for any kind of European positions and are actively aiming to turn over the squad and trim the fat (re: high wages for non-contributors), it makes perfect sense to play Dobbin in order to prepare him for a permanent place in the squad next season (potentially saving us a fortune) and make us more dynamic as an attacking force in the later stages of a game, by constantly offering a willing runner in behind. What we've seen from Rondón (though not through the lack of trying) is not even a level below the minimum expected, it's several levels below imo.

To give Dobbin more game time, means taking Gordon/Gray & Townsend out. Hes a wide forward winger, not a centre forward certainly not a centre forward in the way we play.
I agree he needs more game time, but it should be in his position.

Theirry Small hasnt played a game. We have blooded 3 or 4 young players in that time. A bit of an odd decision IMO, and would have played if he were here.

As for Dobbin, yes he gave the ball away, did very well before it though. I thought his usage was fine yesterday. Its risk/reward isnt it? He did well though, and the move down the left was fantastic.
