Leighton Baines

Davies is the most realistic and would be a good buy.

Surely if Baines goes for say 15, Martinez should get around 30m to allow us to push on in Jan?

Right Bill?

I haven't seen him properly but when I have he has just looked average. Is he that good? has he got pace or is he slow? is he technically good?

We would need to buy Shaw first and then off load Baines but I highly doubt Shaw would leave Southampton.

Very athletic, strong for his age and reads the game well. His technical side isn't up to Baines standard but any time I've watched him he retains the ball well and can spot a cross. He signed a long term in January so could be pricey but if Baines is sold on then Shaw is the lad to go for

Or invest the cash in this guy

I think the difference is timing, essentially the great transfer window acknowledged by one and all could have looked decidedly less so if baines and Felli had gone particularly at the 11th hour with no chance of replacing.

But this is how it will be done in the new paradigm at EFC.

Fellani went at the "11th hour" because Roberto had Barry signed and NcCarthy all but signed.

Otherwise it would have been no go (phew....we dodged a bullet there....would anyone want the big lad back at the expense of Barry anf Jamesie Mac?)

Ditto Baines. If Roberto had wanted to sell Baines he would have had someone lined up.....if he wanted him to stay he was staying because he is our player and is still under contract.

That's what happened.

We don't have to sell Baines in January but if we do I will have complete faith that Roberto has a plan and Baines him honour his contract wasn't a part of it.

I don't know why everyone is fretting over this.....if the first quarter season has shown us anything it is that Baines is no longer the catalyst for practically everything we do in the final third.

At the end of the day Leighton Baines is only a full back.

It's not for nowt that transfer records aren't broken to purchase full backs.

I am saying all that and I hope fervently that he stays at least until the end of the season......which I think he will.

A lot of football sense is articulated here. Baines is kind of talismanic for us though. But then again, I thought the same about Fellaini and was wrong.
Anyway, football is not my day job. But it is RM's and I have faith in his ability to deal with 'all this'.

He hasn't been all that great this season (except for those ridiculous free kicks vs West Ham) but I'd hate to see him go since he's the coolest man in football
Almost guaranteed that he'll be on his way in Jan though if there isn't still some serious contention for the Champions league spots

I do agree with this but the cynic in me sees "no contract signed = Baines wants to go" and I think that will decide things.

Mmm.

Look, as much it pains me to say, if a player wants to go, they should go. I only want players interested and therefore motivated, to play for Everton. If that player is Baines then I'm gutted, but he must move on.

If he wants to stay, and I'm sure RM like every single one of us wants him to, then happy days. If not, thanks Leighton, yet we then look to the future. It would be a sad day, but one we'd recover from.

He's been great this season, it's just that his role has changed a bit.

I am hoping the fact a new contract has not been signed does not guarantee he wants to leave. If he is to sign a new contract it could realistically be the last big one of his career so he will want to make sure everything is the max it can be in regards to salary, length and other rights that are included these days. On that basis I dont think it will be something that is drawn up and agreed quickly so, for all we know, they might be just haggling over the small print but they are not going to let anyone know what is happening every step of the way.

I would hope that is the case.
