Leighton Baines

Personally, I couldn't get on board with that. Oviedo looks to be a great prospect, but the rash challenge from the game the other week is evident that he has lot to learn on the Defensive side of things.

Granted, using him as a WB would alleviate some of the defensive aspects of his game. But we'd be relying on him to perform week in week out with no cover for him. I'm more than happy to have him as an understudy for Baines for the foreseeable future, with Oviedo eventually replacing him further down the line.
I like Oviedo, a lot. In my opinion he's too good to be sitting on the bench for the next 2 or 3 years as Baines' "understudy".

He needs to be playing football at this stage of his career and if he doesn't get it here, he should move on and play elsewhere and promote Garbutt or one of the kids to the understudy role.

I get what you're saying mate, but who would you rather have at LB?

Personally, I'd be up for seeing him in front of Baines on occasion, either as a sub for Pienaar. Or Osman, with Pienaar drifting centrally.

I rate the lad, and it looks like Martinez does too, so hopefully we'll be seeing more of him. Just not at the expense of Baines!

Roberto Martinez believes Manchester United's pursuit of the Everton full-back is over

Roberto Martinez is convinced that Manchester United’s summer pursuit of Leighton Baines has ended.

The Everton boss insists that the £12m which the Red Devils tabled for the England defender in June was a “final offer”, and there has been no further interest from Old Trafford since that inquiry was firmly rejected.

Speculation has gathered in recent weeks that David Moyes will return with increased bids for Baines, who is expected to feature tonight as Roy Hodgson’s Three Lions side face Scotland at Wembley, and midfielder Marouane Fellaini.

But the Toffees manager reckons that initial approach for his left-back, which came shortly after he had taken charge at Goodison following Moyes’ departure for United, was the end of the matter.

He said: “Before we went to Austria one club officially contacted ourselves with an offer and it was a final offer.

“They put something over and the valuation wasn’t anywhere near the quality of Leighton Baines. That was the end of it but since then there’s been all the speculation, which has been part of what the transfer window is.

“There’s never been another club or anyone else putting in an offer for Leighton. Since then we’ve moved on and we’re continuing to focus on the start of the season.”

Great news from the manager, straight from the horses mouth.

Transfer news: Manchester United want Leighton Baines to hand in transfer request at Everton - Club want the England international to prove he wants to join United by forcing a move away from Goodison Park

Manchester United are hoping that Leighton Baines will push for an Everton exit in a bid to show the Premier League champions that he wants to move to Old Trafford.

Toffees manager Roberto Martinez has insisted that United have made a “final offer” for Baines, having bid £12m to try and lure the England left-back to follow former manager David Moyes to the Theatre of Dreams.

But the Daily Mail is reporting that United want Baines, who set-up England debutant Rickie Lambert for last night’s winning goal over Scotland – to hand in a written transfer request to prove he want to leave Everton for United.

God, they just won't let this story die, will they?

I accept I'll probably be in a minority of one, but I would be comfortable selling Baines for 16 million, using the cash to strengthen other areas and use Oviedo as left wing back in Martinez' preferred 3 at the back system.

Obviously in an ideal world I wouldn't sell, but that money could buy the lad from Ajax and a quality central midfielder, while Oviedo would be a more than able replacement for Baines.

Agreed, it's important for Martinez to get his own team asap and like it or not that means selling.

Baines strength is going forward hopefully the more forward orientated Martinez will get creativity throughout the side negating the loss.

The notion our most potent attacker is a full back always seemed an indictment to me.

You´re wrong, selling Baines would be a disaster for us this season. He´s one of the most dangerous players in the league, if not world football, and we can´t spare that given the lack of pace and penetration in our squad.

How dare you!

If Utd do want Baines they should be made pay a really exorbitant price for him because of the way they are acting.

He is a quality player and should command a premium price. They want him to force the issue to drive down the price.

We should act as our neighbours have done with Suarez, play hardball set a price(exorbitant) ask them to meet it or f... off.
