Oh come on now Zat. Thor was WAAAAAAYYYY better than JL.

JL was a bit of a mess. The DCEU is so Everton right now.

Honestly, I think I can separate the 3 styles really;

Batman/superman stuff = Dark/crime ridden planet vibe more of an 'adult' type viewing with the semblance of a story, fun quirks and a 'real life' type world with superheroes thrown in. The Bale batman films were fantastic and I think now they have tried to copy marvel with adding in some comedy figures which can be fun once in a while but the flash for example was grating by the end.

Thor and Avengers = Light heated cartoonish theme with the focus on comedy, every character is introduced and then gradually become a parody figure (see thor in avengers to the last film) From beginning extremely strongly with an immense Avengers movie with some LOL level jokes thrown in here and there it now seeks to have jokes in almost every second sentence.

When Avengers came out, I feel that if the last thor had come out straight after by an independent filmmaker it would have been seen as a parody film.

For 'realism' clearly DC is the way to go...for cheap jokes throughout then its Marvel.

Strangely, Guardians of the Galaxy goes way beyond the Marvel ridiculousness but the comedy and jokes work almost all the time.

Seen any good ones recently? I watched that Valerian movie with my gf and we enjoyed that much more than thor despite its low ratings

I know, I'm totally bewildered.

Did you find my youtube link amusing? If that's the humour on offer then i'm just not entertained...

I don't know how you can't not find it funny.

You can't really pigeon hole the two franchises though. Each film brings it's Directors vision and set parameters for it's place within the Universe. Of course Marvel is further along, and has a much clearer vision for each character. I'll try to break this down and not bore you to death.

To start off you have to look at the copious amounts of source material. DC came first, no doubt. In that regard DC managed to create the Justice League before Marvel even became Marvel. The story goes that Martin Goodman (Timely / Atlas Comics) was playing golf with Jack Liebowitz (DC) who was boasting about his stable of heroes. Furious, Goodman charged Stan Lee with stealing the idea and creating their own. He created The Fantastic Four with Jack Kirby. Lee, already 30 years old and on the verge of quitting saw this as his big break and the rest is history. His humour and personality resonate with the characters because he created them.

DC heroes bore their roots in a much more serious time in History. Marvel heroes were born amid the revolutions of the 1960's, while DC arose as a direct response to communism during the War. People were bored with the stuffy 1950's and by the sixties had turned their attention to having more fun with life. The characters and themes are a direct social and cultural reflection of the times they were created.

In my opinion, DC has misfired by not having a clear and persistent vision for the franchise. Who in their right mind would put Gotham City and Metropolis right next to each other? Why would Superman not really know about Batman, despite A being a Reporter and B being Superman. It's said in Justice League Batman has been fighting crime in Gotham for 20 years! If he's such a vigilante then why does Gordon have a Bat signal? Lois Lane horribly miscast. I love Amy Adams but as a red headed Lois Lane? You see, for someone like me, who can spot the flaws a mile away, it's these fundamental decisions again and again that have let the team down. Look, for example at the suits they wear. Marvel characters seem to wear practical suits, and definitively reflect the story. Ie Iron Man - a constant evolution, Captain America - starts with a garishly colourful 'stage costume' and it evolves to suit the film. DC Suits, bar the Mecha Bat suit, which was awesome, are fraught with flaws. Take for example, Superman. A quick scan back to M.O.S and none of the Kryptnians wear anything like that. Its all monochrome; Russell Crowe has a very cool suit nothing like Supermans. Where are his red undies? Fail.

Marvel, in defence of DC has had as many misfires as DC though. Hulk? Twice? Thor 2? That was serious and was panned. Marvel decided to lighten it up, give it a reboot and throw in Hulk with the 'Planet Hulk' storyline. Ant Man? I loved it but loads didn't. Marvel can take the piss out of themselves. They have the talent to pull it off. The thing with Marvel is that they nail the casting every time. Spanning them across time. When I saw 1989 Michael Douglas my head nearly fell off. 1991 Downy Jr. It's genius.

DC's failings don't have to be terminal. They just need to go back to the actual material and craft the stories properly. Why are they creating Batmans origin again? Why not make Hush? Or Batman and Son? Or the Long Halloween? Arkham Asylum? Year One? Kingdom Come? Red Son? Why does DC, which has an insane amount of content not try stuff like Stormwatch? Y the Last Man? The Invisibles? They need to freshen it up, why not use the Vertigo line? Swamp Thing. Fables. Sandman. Transmetropolitan. Constantine. Enigma. Doom Patrol for crying out loud. I haven't given up on them, but they need to dust off some of the amazing material they have, and get the right people to produce it. I will still go and watch Aquaman and Flashpoint, and hopefully they have some room to make the best films they can be.

I haven't really watched alot of films recently, more TV shows. I thought Valerian was ace. I was highly dubious, and the main cast a little weak, but thoroughly entertaining.

You're like a superfan :o

I also enjoyed ant-man, there wasn't a joke every 2 sentences...you know what I mean? latest Thor was like a Pollock painting...just throw a lot of jokes and see if any of them stick...from his serious tone in the avengers to a comedy figure...I understand what youre saying about them changing things because they were too 'serious' but a joke every sentence when they all fell flat just wasn't for me.

As for Deadpool...truly, I cant fathom it...some of his quips are clever writing but not LOL funny...and its every word or sentence ehich is an attempted joke...

I loved Ragnorok, but I see your point about the focus of the series becoming more comedy. However even in the first film he was a humerous character (even if you were laughing more at him than with him) - eg the coffee and pet shops scenes.

TBh, I turned off Deadpool after about 20mins of utter terrible, forced, unfunny jokes.

I still haven't made it all of the way through a comic book film.
I didn't mind the first 3 Spiderman's, but I'm with you the Marvel comicbook films getting churned out recently just aren't my bag.

Loved the Batman Films though, that's how you do comicbook films.
