Last Film You Watched

Predator badlands, went against some advice on here and watched it. Thought it was allright actually! when the blue ape thing and synth first appear I was dreading it but they get better as film develops.

Priest (1994)

Directed by Antonia Bird, who went on to direct the underrated Brit gangster flick Face

Written by Jimmy McGovern who recycles a couple of Cracker episode plots into one story.

It's about a gay Priest who deals with the weight of his calling, homosexuality and keeping the confession sacrosanct.

I doesn't work for me as it falls between two stools. I don't think McGovern has the skill to show the Church in anything but negative tones, while the Gay plot is overstated and thrown in your face at points in that very 90's cynical brash gen x style. As a result it is neither a true film about faith vs desire or a impassioned attack against church doctrine and structure.

Filmed in Liverpool, I dug it out because I was knocking abut the set the day they filmed in the tower block that used to be up behind Grant gardens and wanted to see it again since the 90's. And watching it you get some real snap shots of post 80's decay as they film around St Malachy’s in Dingle and such. Although if you are from Liverpool you'll notice the obvious geography anachronisms that are filmed for non Liverpool viewers.

Is ok, not especially original, a sort of reply to Tarantino. Botched robbery stuff...

Cracker took a few swings at the church, the amnesiac priest that turned up in line of duty, then the hoo-haa about Fitz's ma dying (confessional), and then the priest who's brother was knocking off working girls with the Shirley Temple vibe. Oh and then the cult with the high chief rodding isolated school girls. Coltrane was often very good, gravitas to go with his gravity I suppose. Rip Robbie.

Is that the one with Damon Albarn in?

I remember it seeming like an almost parody level deliberate attempt at the most formulaic cliched 'Cool Britannia' post Tarantino / Trainspotting late 90s Brit-flick possible even back when it came out.

Or I might have been feeling grumpy on whatever day it was I rented it from Blockbusters.

That is the one.

And a young Lena Headey as well as Robert Carlyle, Ray Winstone with the cockney dialled down and a collection of Brit TV regulars.

Enjoyed it last time I saw it but then my bar has always been pretty low.

Just seen The Bone Temple and I largely enjoyed it. Fiennes and O’Connell were really good (although O’Connell’s accent did grate a bit). The performances were pretty good all round with a couple of exceptions from minor characters.

I know it’s a zombie film and so is somewhat ridiculous by its very nature but I am not having that he cured one of them with morphine and a bunch of pills. The virus has been known of for 28 years but vitally hasn’t left the British Isles. So this means that all the doctors in the World haven’t been able to come up with a cure but he can when all he has is a few books and old medicine.

From what I`ve read, he pacified it with morphine, it became addicted to the morphine and it`s addiction over rides it`s desire for human flesh, so it keeps coming back for it`s fix ;)
