Last Film You Watched

More of a documentary but I'm watching LA 92 on netflix, it's harrowing but very compelling. It's a montage of footage of the beating of Rodney king, the trial of the police officers and the riots that followed their acquittal.

If you enjoyed that, try 'Let it Fall:Los Angeles 1982-1992' - An absolutely riveting documentary

Coco: Pixar pretty much nails it every time. Coco is no different. Superb

Darkest Hour: I have my issues with Churchill the man, but very well played by Oldman. A few scenes descend into silly Hollywood tropes, and the direction/script is heavy-handed in places but well worth a watch mainly for Oldman.

Three Billboards: It's about time people shut up about Meryl Streep and recognise that Frances McDormand is the finest female actor of her generation. 2 Oscars and she's still criminally underrated. Really enjoyed it but it's still a bit messy and has some dubious moralising. McDonagh has a habit of being incredibly funny one minute and then totally falling on his arse the next. McDormand should have him sit down with her husband for some tips on subtle comedy...

Frances McDormand can play one or two character types better than anyone else on the planet, Streep can play a whole spectrum of characters better than most people can. It is very subjective but imho that makes Streep the better actor to be able to vary the roles and do them so successfully.

The Town.

Great film with compelling characters. The scene with Chris Cooper explaing to Alfeck about his wayward mother over the prison phone is poignant, among many other great scenes. Jon Hamm is also excellent.

And I can't find the "Movie villains" thread, but this guy would be right up there:

Saw Darkest Hour yesterday.

Whatever you think of Churchill's domestic politics, thank God he was in charge in 1940. If he'd have surrendered as the rest of his War Cabinet wanted him to there'd have been no D-Day Landings and Fascism would have reigned supreme over Europe for a thousand years, as per Hitler's wishes.

Gary Oldman does a cracking job. For a svelte, good-looking guy in his fifties to play a portly, bald septuagenarian so well is impressive.
