I'm in no way trying to be disrespectful, but I think you might be looking through blue-tinted glasses at the current status of EFC. In the modern game, cash is king. Clubs are no longer "big" because of what they did pre-1990. That applies equally to SAFC.
Some Everton fans think that our Title in 1987 matters or players these days care about whether we beat Bayern in 85.
As far as modern football players are concerned its all about what a team did last season, did they get Europa/CL, do they challenge for the title and yes, as you say, how much money they can offer.
A player picking between Everton or Sunderland would only care about who offered the most money.
So forgive the large sections of our fanbase who think we are still relevant as a football club in 2016.
