Transfer Rumour Lamine Kone

Nobody has broken any promises - on the contrary, the Club have now announced very publically that he will get his contract in two weeks' time, once we have sorted out the more pressing matter of our transfer incomings.

There hasn't been a contract offer from Sunderland, because they know they won't be offering as much as we are, and they don't want the player to hold them to ransom.
The club were just putting the ball back in Kone's court, and making sure they don't look bad to the fans should he leave.

Why will it matter? I know some fans like to play the "big club" top trumps game, but in the modern era do players really give a [Poor language removed]?

It's not really a question of being a bigger club, but if a player has a chance to increase his wage at a club with more ambition, and better prospects of a more successful/enjoyable playing career then they are going to strongly consider it.

I take your point that Everton haven't done a great deal in the PL era, but let's be honest, of all the established current PL clubs, Sunderland have done absolutely nothing of note for a good 16 years when you last finished above us and even then it was only a 7th placed finish. Players will notice that. Of course we're not a glamour club ourselves currently, but we've still achieved European Qualifications in recent memory and played in quite a few semi finals etc. Kone will know that his time at Sunderland in the present era will either be a relegation battle or a 14th/15th placed finish until Moyes can hopefully take you up the league.

I'm not suggesting Kone will see Everton as a huge step up from yourselves or that he will even come this window, but it's pretty obvious from his behaviour that he isn't set on staying at Sunderland. That's just something that happens to clubs like yourselves due your poor performances on the pitch for a long long time. It happened to us in the 90's and 2000's, and even now, if a "current" bigger club with more ambition and better chances of success comes along like Man City, then the player will want to leave.

I have a lot of respect for Sunderland as a club and your fans by the way so I hope you don't take that the wrong way.

Behave, as if that would preclude you from even having a discussion about Kone's new contract, which if he was so willing to accept wouldn't take long eh?

I think you are massively underestimating what goes into these kind of contract negotiations. It's not just a case of print and sign. If it took a day it would be a day better spent on other things at the moment.

In that case, I'm surprised that Kone has since that point (I) played 90 minutes in the first game; and (ii) denied any knowledge of the supposed "transfer request". Given the agitations of his agent last week, if he wasn't happy with the promise of a deal on 1 September, I would have thought we'd be hearing more in the media from his agent by now. It's been five days since Moyes spoke on the issue.

(i) Stones handed in a transfer request last year and played the game after doing so. Same happened with Lescott when he wanted to move (ii) he hasn't denied any knowledge? It's Moyes who has said that the player 'didn't hand one in', yet proceeded to fine him anyway... similarly Martinez last year said something like 'John [Stones] didn't mean to hand the request in'

With all due respect mate, we aren't a small club ourselves. Everton are a big club, but have only won one trophy in the last 30 years. To a 27yo Ivorian who's played his entire career in France, it will likely come down to whether or not the money is right. He won't give a damn if you finished top 8 ten years in a row recently. It's not the way the modern player thinks.

Well, no matter what we have won or haven't won over the past 30 years, we are still much higher up the football totem than Sunderland, whom have probably had at least half a dozen relegations during our fallow period, and the thoughts of a Sunderland player "using" Everton as a bargaining tool in contract negotiations with Sunderland is laughable my friend.

:)

I get that but he was told if they stay up he would get a new deal, it looks like this didn't materialise and it has only come up now because of the outside interest. In his eyes he probably thought it would be done at the end of the season and has missed out on 3 months at 30k a week.

Well that's what Arnautovic at Stoke did lol. Forget Sunderland, a decent club with a good set of fans, a Stoke player did just that!

That would say to me that he is waiting on Sland accepting an offer because if he pots in a TR does this affect or limit any monies to himfrom the transfer.

Could also be a way of saying I am happy here.

Something worrying me as to why they will wait until September 1st. Surely that would indicate that there is a possibility he will leave ? If he doesn't then he gets his improved deal. Watching him against city he looks a beast, also showed some power dribbling out from defence with the ball too.

If they keep him until that date and then offer a new contract it could be for not as much dosh as he wanted and then he is screwed until January by which time it will be too late.

They can offer him a new contract but can't be held to ransom by him and his agents. If they don't like the offer that's not really Sunderlands problem, they've still offered him a new contract like they promised and he's forced to stay at least until Jan in which Moyes would be hoping to win him over by then. This still gives Sunderland the freedom to accept a crazy offer if won came in.

Actually a really smart move from Moyes and Sunderland.

I'm in no way trying to be disrespectful, but I think you might be looking through blue-tinted glasses at the current status of EFC. In the modern game, cash is king. Clubs are no longer "big" because of what they did pre-1990. That applies equally to SAFC.
