I wonder if he felt he had to apologise to the Jewish Chronicle, for 'not defending Israel' enough as Luciana Berger felt she had to in 2016.

"Britain's youngest Jewish MP, Luciana Berger, is facing criticism over her record of defending Israel since being elected to Parliament.

Ms Berger, 30, was Labour Friends of Israel director for three years before stepping down last year to fight her election campaign in the Liverpool Wavertree constituency.

There was an expectation that she would be a leading pro-Israel voice in Parliament.

But critics say there is a feeling within the city's Jewish community and among Israel supporters that she has steered clear of raising the issue in order to protect her career.

On her website Ms Berger describes her former role without mentioning the word "Israel". The "about Luciana" section of the site states: "Before being elected I ran a not-for-profit campaigning and education organisation which works for peace in the Middle East. "

Ms Berger has not mentioned Israel on any occasion while speaking in the House. She declined to comment, but the JC understands she staunchly defends her pro-Israel efforts. It is thought she feels "unlucky" not to have been called to speak during Foreign Office Questions.

The description of LFI on her website is the same as one used by the group under her directorship. She is now a member of the International Council of Jewish Parliamentarians and the Jewish Labour Movement'.
I thought she was elected as a British Labour MP?

Do they think they own our members of parliament?

The official opposition shouldn’t bother focusing on winning a general election.

Sorry what? Is it really more important to you that the leadership cement the Labour Party as a hard left party, as opposed to winning a general election?
I said he should forget the election not 'dont fight it'.

I'm glad to be able to clarify that obvious point for you.

Never liked Field myself, always thought he was smarmy, but he is right about at least one thing on this - the gall of the Corbynites in telling Jews whether or not they should be offended is absolutely barmy. Arrogance to the nth degree.

Like you really needed to ask that question... of course it's more important. Ideology over everything, over and over again.

So why is Field getting hammered? He's been voted in overwhelmingly for decades now, so it would appear the electorate are quite keen on him? It seems like local party folk are the ones that want him out, not the electorate.

There are many seats up and down the country that are safe, it's not unique to Labour. However, Mr Feild has enjoyed gains as the Labour party journies back to the left, both in 2015 and 2017 elections.

And its labour that wants to change that next month with its one member one vote for its candidates and sitting MPs, giving power back to membership, rather than power concentrated in committee and union.

"The right to vote for your representatives is a basic tenet of any democratic organisation. No representative should be above scrutiny and accountability. Open selection is not about creating a hostile environment. It is about creating a democratic member-led organisation, about enhancing the Party’s democratic processes. I fully support the Labour International motion as a step towards achieving that crucial goal" Jeremy Corbyn

I truly hope Mr Field is true to his word and finds the principle to have the by-election.

Really is no point with the fixed term parliment act, not sure the implications of this move by Con/Lib coalition has really filtered throughout the country yet. The oppositions are there to hold the Government to account, once you look through what the Tories have achieved you get sense what Zombie really means.

I havnt really got a dog in this fight, but my view is that a local constituency might have a better idea who they think is suitable to potentially represent them, rather than the whole of the party, who will, predictably, vote for whoever reflects their own political views. And most will not have a vote in actually electing them anyrate.

You know pete - esoteric things like homes, jobs, not geeting into tens of thousands of debt for being educated, having some rights and not wanting their life expectancy to drop even further.

What rights dont we have? And I would never trust any politician who says "Vote me and you will live longer".

Agree on housing though.

The gradual removal of protections for workers for a start - mainly the spread of the gig economy across various sectors, but also the rather larger impact that leaving the EU (and leaving the ECHR) will bring. With regards to life expectancy - I wouldn't trust any politician who said that either, but nor would I trust one who would allow all the things that have resulted in it levelling off continuing (if not making them worse).

On the GIG economy, I am in it, and enjoy it to be fair. I may well feel different if I was bringing up a family I guess.

On life expectancy, I had a conversation with a senior consultant person about that, and she reckoned that this generation of kids may well be the first to have a lower one than their parents. I have my own theories on maybe why, and also why she may be wrong.

I personally dont think the levelling off, if indeed it is, has anything to do with politicians though.

The problem though Roydo is that the constituencies can be taken over, as they were in the 80’s in Liverpool, by militant, now morphed into momentum. This unfortunately happens on a cycle with Labour.....

But all politicians want that. So what exactly is this guy offering, and more importantly can deliver, that different.....
