Unfortunately I never used the expression of "in preference to" in any write up, but I did some searches on the internet and manage to find out the actual meaning to the sentence.

Just because the transfer window opens on July 1st doesn't mean that the deals can't be done in advance of that.

You never made a big fuss of it mate, just got a little mixed up. That happens us all from time to time.

I am aware of that fact - they can't be done - clubs can agree a fee - but clearly, these agreements can be broken - as Sheff Utd have illustrated here, by deciding to refute Everton permission to speak to Naughton - after an advanced agreement.

This deal should have been done back in May so all that was needed was the lawyers to pen the contracts come July 1st. We're back to square one now while other clubs have gone about their business in a professional & competent fashion and got about a month's headstart on us.

Everton simply do not do transfers very well at all.

My point was - tell me the name of one of these other Premiership clubs who had a months headstart on us by getting their deals done back in May?

I think I would need them, but it's more to do with me not reading enough when I was at school, I am particular weak when it comes to these phrases that I don't normally used.

Any reference books or web site I could go to learn more of these expression?

I feel I am losing it sometime, may be because I am oversea for a year now and I don't used the language as much.
