That logic always makes me cringe, you would swear Kirkby was the first and only site the club had looked at. Lets not forget a new ground has been at the top of the agenda for 15+ years.
Yep, and we had a great solution in King's Dock - cheaper than Kirkby and a whole lot more appetising, but the chairman didn't fancy loosening his grip on the reins.
Then, Terry had his chat on the train with Bill, effectively saying, leave it all to me and I'll sort it for you (the easy option), years later and this is where we are.
For all of the derision heaped upon it, the Loop was clearly a good enough prospect for Bestway to spend seven figures in viability studies including bringing HOK Sports on board to demonstrate the potential for a 55,000 seater stadium. This wasn't some cock-eyed lash up from KEIOC, this was a private company prepared to spend a lot of their own money to come forward with a proposal.
EFC's response? "55,000? Actually, we need a site that can accommodate 75,000"
Kirkby Stadium Capacity? 50,401 - with the threat of a 10k reduction should draconian 'mode of transport' criteria not be met within 2 years.
There was some great work done by Tom Hughes and Trevor Skempton around what could be done with GP. At the time, KSS - consultants on the DK Stadium were wheeled out to try and pick fault with it, suggesting that the current footprint could only accommodate a 36,000 seat stadium - conveniently ignoring what was a blatant hint from LCC at the time about the area being about to lose a school, and that the one on our doorstep could be it (nudge, nudge).
These approaches were made in spite of the Club's highly publicised exclusivity deal. A deal which quite clearly slammed the door on any alternative and forced the Board's hand when any alternative was presented.
I'm amazed Bestway went as far as they did for us. In their position, I certainly wouldn't have spent all of that cash in putting a proposal together until I knew I was going to be given at least the time of day; and once they had been treated so shabbily there was no way on God's earth anyone else would be putting their hard earned on the line.
This is all old news, I'm surprised it's still viewed as at all contentious.
