2018/19 Kieran Dowell

It's strange really I thought he was ok tonight, carried the ball well and looked to create chances.

I agree with this. You can tell there's a football brain in there, reading the situations and deciding what to do with the ball. Also seems like he knows quite well that the physical and pressing aspects of the game are important for him to keep working on in order to stay in the squad and earn game time in the league. But he still looks a bit too much like a gentlemanly playmaker from many decades ago – needs to be quicker and sharper with the key pass, perhaps put him on Richarlison's fitness regimen, to be a realistic alternative to Sigurdsson.

The current version of Dowell might be able to find some luck against a Premier League team if underestimated, overloooked and sloppily marked, but he needs to prepare himself for getting constantly clawed at by the toughest defensive midfielders in the league if he is to succeed in taking the step up.

He has always seemed too lightweight for the top level. You have to have a presence to play centrally and he seems to lack this.
You can have all the talent in the world but if you lack the will, determination or backbone to fight for the space to use it you will only ever be a peripheral figure on the pitch. This is even more the case centrally where lack of concentration can be a liability to the team.
I hope I'm wrong , I hope he matures into the star player for us many expect him to be but currently he is nowhere near that for me.

Another one of our so called stars who is average at the top level.

Said it before get offers of £8-10 million for the likes of him and Calvert Lewin and get rid as they'll only ever be good enough for the lower prem / upper championship.

Oh why did we keep him when Lille offered 2 million a young Keeper could have had a go that new 6 ft 2 young keeper,
He is a joke the SHRECK he's a wreck.....

Do you know who we miss already Joe.

Rooney. We miss his goals. End of.

I think Dowell is a prime example of the shoddy level of coaching at this club. He has the ability, he has plenty of talent. Technically he is strong.

But he doesn't look like he has any idea what to do on the field. He doesn't sense space. He doesn't know when to pass or shoot. He looks terrified to take responsibility so coasts through games on the periphery.

Where was the coaching? Why has he not learned how to get involved more? Why has he no self belief?

I think we need to ask serious questions of Unsworth and his U23 staff. They aren't providing anything for the first team.
