When we're out of form and needing a win. Being gifted a peno to put us in the lead...yeah, he's an idiot.
Or, he is currently our best attacker, trying to still be our best attacker.
We want players to step up.....then we dont.

What made him do what he did...

Then do it in the game not on a penalty he has no right to take.
If he won it, then fine. He didnt. So think about the team and let the better penalty taker take it.
I understand his desperation to score, but why didn't he wear a t shirt after his free kick against West Ham?
I can't remember exactly, but didn't Adrian guess the right way and Baines still scored it? I would call that a near-perfect penalty. He scores and its not an issue.
Baines penalty at West Ham was also very close to bieng saved.
Just saying, its easy to point the finger and be wise after the event.

Maybe Baines didn't want to take it because he thought Foster was too familiar with his technique through all the England squad get togethers.

I did it before, during, and after it

I am looking for sommat hear to redeem Mirallas in my mind.
Has there been some talk in the training ground about Baines and penalties?
That was a bad penno at OT.
The one at Sunderland was dreadful.......even though he scored it was an awful penno which the keeper should have saved easily.
Surely he just didn't take it upon himself on the spare of the moment?
