I think people groaning about redoing his contract are missing a central point. Teams can't block a player from moving to a club where they can get significantly higher wages just because "he has a contract." If they do that, it becomes harder to recruit players in the future. This is because players naturally want to earn more if they improve, and if we get a reputation as a club that prevents them from earning more then we are less likely to attract the kind of high-upside young players that we need to move forward. Therefore, we either need to raise his salary or be prepared to sell him.
