No it wasn't. It was more like £40m. Some idiot claimed he went for £50m and everyone ran with it despite credible sources like Sky Sports & L'Equipe suggesting otherwise.

And obscene money or not every single Chelsea fan wants him back in the team. It was incredibly daft of the club to let him leave. He's better than every defender at the club bar Azpilicueta.
Really mate? Better than terry? Or different players? I quite liked him in central midfield the few times he played there

Which is one of the things that was so odd about their approach.

Mourinho had apparently told them in April who he wanted and like most managers prefers to have players in for preseason, the previous year they signed their key targets by July, the clubs had a good relationship with Chelsea even having some young players we might have wanted on loan and it was obvious we needed replacements as we only had two CBs.
Chelsea have been screwing clubs over transfer fees for a while now. Did anyone expect that we would have to pay 28m for Rom?

I thought we would get him for around 22m and at most 25m.

They were probably waiting for us to sign replacements.

Agree we should have signed one early on, was crazy that we didnn't.

But that doesn't explain them delaying the initial bid, they didn't when they wanted Costa for instance - unlike us they usually do their business early on in the window.

MAYBE, they had been told we would sell if we could replace him.

I know the public stance was he was never for sale, but everybodys for sale.

It would explain why we went mental when they made the bids public, we probably wanted to keep it hush hush.

Just an idea.

Tbh, think he probably was for sale if we got a bid for ~35m at the start of the window, just surprised Chelsea didn't get up to that amount earlier as they surely would have known we'd not sell for less than S'ton sold Shaw for.

prob thought they could get him cheaper and were surprised at our rejections, all guesswork really

They tried to lowball it, not sure why, history would tell them that despite his many, many flaws, Bill doesnt allow himself to be lowballed.

The most worrying thing for me and forgive me if ive missed it at some point, but Stones never "took back" his transfer request, the fact that he put 1 in still makes no sense to me. Clearly I dont know the lad, but he never, ever struck me as somebody that would do that, but the fact that its still on the table is a worry for me.

Makes plenty of sense really

Me too, felt like I'd been kicked in the solar plexus when saw it reported which I know is a stupid reaction and should know better at my age  but didn't make it less gut-wrenching.

Haven't seen any reports that it has been withdrawn either, tbh think the damage is already done in any case.

See this is an interesting point, not the bit about quality of defenders at Chelsea bit more what Luiz was sold for as it seems to be a major factor when people on here try to estimate what JS is worth

So what do we know about Luiz fee? Not a lot but according to The Swiss Rambler in 2013/14 Chelsea's made £65 million profit from player sales and in that year they sold 3 players for top money.

1) Kevin De Bryne. Purchased in2012 for a £7 million and after amortisation his book value when sold for a £18million in 2014 was £2.8 generating about £ 15.2 million profit
2) juan Mata . Purchased in 2011 for £23.5 million. His value after factoring in his signing a new long term contract signed in 2012 was about £15.5 million . He was sold for £37.1 million . Meaning another £21.6 profit

So add the profit from those two deals and it's around £37 million meaning still about £28 million to be accounted for

Luiz it seems cost Chelsea about £23million when he signed in 2011. He signed a new contract in 2012 . When Chelsea sold him in 2014 I estimate that his amortised value was about £12 million spookily if you add that to the £28 million (see above)you come out at £40 million

Still a vast sum and Iknow its all back of a fag packet and I suspect that in that £65 million profit there was the odd bits and pieces from elsewhere but I suspect the £50 million fee is just not anywhere near the reality

I know it makes "sense", in the grand scheme of things, vastly more money and an actual real chance of some silverware, at no point do I blame the lad, I honestly dont blame anybody wishing to leave Everton currently, we are going backwards at an alarming rate.

Not sure if your serious or not mate, but how you can figure we are going backwards baffles me
