Joel Robles

Just to champagne his cause further...

You see the almost carbon copy of the goal Costa scored against us. Ball played over the top, Jagielka confused by the bounce. Howard flaps and it goes under him...

Last night, same again, Jagielka bemused, Robles off his line in a flash, a cushioned header out. Class.
Yes Tim would have gone walkabout again that ball last night was further out of the area too!

Not to talk down Robles here, but praising him for not trusting his defenders to get the job done doesn't speak too highly for them.

I appreciate what you're saying and I think Howard gets too much of the blame. Whilst I have no sympathy for him as he's an arrogant bell, anyone thinking Joel will solve all our problems is being optimistic.

However no one thing will solve all our problems. All we can do is try to make individually good changes which hopefully lead to a combined, improved outcome. Joel is no worse than Howard in any way but is noticeably better in quite a few ways. There was no finer example than when he rushed out and headed the ball yesterday. The EXACT same thing happened with Howard VS Chelsea, where Jags stupidly allowed the second bounce (yes it's not just the keeper at fault), but where Howard made a complete mess of it and allowed an open net, Joel reacted smartly and cleared the danger. That is a perfect example of Joel being an improvement and a goal being saved.

It not affecting the outcome is irrelevant as it's a team game, but man for man Joel is an improvement. And I just want to see us improve.

Agree 100%. We need a new first choice keeper, but Robles deserves his chance now

Disagree, think a keeper should be the ultimate in pessimists and expect their defenders to make an error so try to position themselves to cover for it if needed. Especially if it is an area that they know their defender has struggled in the recent past as Jags did with Chelsea.

CBs often do much the same thing - Jags has mopped up his defensive partners errors but doesn't mean he thinks they are poor in general.

Promoting Joel to número uno would be a great move for Bobby now.

The fans would love it and there would be an altogether different atmosphere before the kick off next Wednesday night and it would relieve the pressure on the manager a bit.

Because if he puts Timmy back in goal the surly mood in the crowd will not improve one jot.

Regardless of wether you think Joel is the answer. There is a clear difference in trust between GK and defenders as there is with Howard in goal. That alone for me makes me believe that we'd be much better off.
