Joel Robles

But if the results aren't better, then what are you gaining? It's not like we looked more effective going forward with Robles launching the attacks, and all his great communication didn't keep our defenders from leaking chances the same way they do with Howard in goal.

I've said for quite a while that the real problem you all have with Howard is aesthetics. He looks bad when he concedes a goal. It might be the same goal that most other Premier League keepers will concede, but they won't look like Flappy McStarjumps before they pick the ball out of the net. Robles conceded 3 goals on 5 shots on target last night, but he didn't look silly doing it, so somehow it's been transformed into a good performance.

Our real problem is that we don't defend well. There's no cohesiveness to what we do without the ball and we invite far too much pressure. It's not because Howard makes everyone nervous -- we've had a few league matches this season where we set up with an organized defense and maintained concentration for the whole 90 minutes and walked away with a clean sheet with Howard in goal, and now we've seen a couple of matches with Robles in goal where we haven't set up with a defensive intent and we've leaked just as many goals. When we actually set the team out to defend well with everyone tracking back to solid defensive lines and putting pressure on the ball, we're a good defensive team no matter who's in goal. When we decide to commit defenders forward with no regard to who will cover the gaps they leave and let the man on the ball have as much time as he wants, then we leak goals, no matter who's in goal.

I appreciate what you're saying and I think Howard gets too much of the blame. Whilst I have no sympathy for him as he's an arrogant bell, anyone thinking Joel will solve all our problems is being optimistic.

However no one thing will solve all our problems. All we can do is try to make individually good changes which hopefully lead to a combined, improved outcome. Joel is no worse than Howard in any way but is noticeably better in quite a few ways. There was no finer example than when he rushed out and headed the ball yesterday. The EXACT same thing happened with Howard VS Chelsea, where Jags stupidly allowed the second bounce (yes it's not just the keeper at fault), but where Howard made a complete mess of it and allowed an open net, Joel reacted smartly and cleared the danger. That is a perfect example of Joel being an improvement and a goal being saved.

It not affecting the outcome is irrelevant as it's a team game, but man for man Joel is an improvement. And I just want to see us improve.

Agree that Joel isn't the solution to all problems but even a small change can make a difference in mentality and results. Especially as a lot of our dropped points are small margins - the odd goal that means a win goes to a draw or a draw changed to a defeat.

great post. agree 100%

I thought robles had a great game last night.nothing he could do about any of the goals and looks more assured and confident with the ball as his feet than howard.agree probably not the long term solution but should be given a run of games.

Just to champagne his cause further...

You see the almost carbon copy of the goal Costa scored against us. Ball played over the top, Jagielka confused by the bounce. Howard flaps and it goes under him...

Last night, same again, Jagielka bemused, Robles off his line in a flash, a cushioned header out. Class.
