His second full season was pretty awful but so was Moyes'.

Only Royle demanded extra funds and quit when they weren't there while Moyes didn't. So Moyes got the chance to bounce back and Royle didn't. We'll never know what would have happened if he'd sucked it up and stayed on with limited resources.

Well it was over Flo wasn't it. That's why Johnson was ultimately responsible, as Flo later went to Chelsea for a lot more than we would have paid for him.

I'd guess though that Royle was promised funds by Johnson that never materialised whereas Moyes didn't receive such assurances from Kenwright.

nah not sure Bilic can be credited as a Joe Royle signing,

Toffeweb's got different dates for when he joined Everton

says March 97 on the transactions, and May 97 on the player profile,
we all know he stayed at West Ham until the end of that season

as far as I remember Peter Johnson himself conducted that transfer

Royle made the deal before he left. Bilic delayed it because WHU were struggling and he felt he owed them some loyalty. Funny that...

that's what I'm getting at,
he never signed until Royle had gone, so do we say that Royle spent that 4 or 5m whatever it was or not ?

My memory isnt the best as most of the 90's is a haze, but if my memory serves me right, big joe came in in just as bad a situation as moyes did. and dont forget moyes was given the rooney money to re build with.

Easy to overlook that Moyes still lost a world class player to get that money.
Royle just bought some players with money he could spend.

Financially there is no comparison, however in terms of acheivement there is also none.

In terms of ability however, its not that far off, Royle however won a cup when the difference between teams was far less, whilst having money to spend but couldn't get higher than 6th.

Moyes got 4th when the difference between big and small spending teams is insurmountable, but never won a cup.

Moyes better in the league
Royle better in the cup

The turnaround are down to two very different challenges.
Royle had to buy the right players and motivate the team to believe that they were not relegation fodder, this is easier with new faces.
Moyes had to do the same after losing our best player for years.
Both succeeded.

his 1st match was that derby at GP when we were rock bottom of the league.

The derby performance I compare every subsequent one to. We were unstoppable that day. Every player walked off a hero. Sadly missing too often since he left.

Never been prouder to be a blue in the playground the next day!!

I'd love the big fella to have a role at the club one way or another.

Agreed. A true Evertonian.

I loved the Royle era. We played football the way it was supposed to be played. In a weird way, I much prefer to see the energy and drive and pure brute force that we had with ferguson, stuart, limpar, kanchelskis, parkinson and horne then some of the "ticky-tacky football" we see today.

Liquid football

Moyes greatest failing was in the cups, some no mark sides took us to the cleaners over his tenure. Royle on the other coined the phrase 'dogs of war' having been raised on the school of science motto using that tag was insulting and ill advised. Joe, though not his fault, carried the stigma of replacing the Goldenvision, he was never able to hold a candle to the great one and his career suffered for it.

As a manager Royle's teams played a very direct style, not quite route one but very close. His tactics worked well at Oldham but they never suited us, he was a possible role model for Tony Pulis, similar workmen like styles. He motivated men, every manager has to be able to that, Joe excelled and that is where his cup win came from. Up against United, sleeves rolled up and every man got stuck in, it wasn't pretty but on that day it was effective

For me Moyes wins hands down, from nurtured talent to his transfer dealings at a time when we paupers could have gone they way of Leeds, Shef Wed, Wolves etc., he stabilised us, gave us an identity and expectation.I just hope his replacement can improve on expectation and deliver us silver ware(y)

Bit harsh on Joe. The season he took us to 6th we played some good stuff

IMO it was easier then than now, Citeh, Chelsea were still normal football clubs and not mega rich corporations, Blackburn was then supposed to be the mega rich club of the day. Looking at what Moyes faced, there is no comparison. If Joe and his tactics were as good as some suggest he would still be managing today. Sadly his last job was interim manager of Oldham.

I think the media tagged us as " the dogs of war" and joe played up to it, the same way Moyes has played up to the "plucky Everton" tag in recent times,
We played some good stuff at times under Joe Royle, but for me whenever Ferguson played it was an easy get out for the defenders to launch it down field.

I will always be thankful to joe Royle though, for the FA cup in 95 and for players that got you off your seat, like Andrea Kanchelskis

Agent Johnson sacked him over the argument of not letting him sign Flo for I million pounds read his autobiography Johnson was a disgrace!

Johnson was a disgrace, if my memory serves me right Joe had lined up Nigel Martin before he went to Leeds. When he arrived at Johnson's office to discuss terms he was made to sit outside for over an hour, he walked out and who could blame him. Johnson had been discussing something to do with his next money making idea spudoodles, glad to say they sank like a stone
