To be honest I don't think there is a blue who does not appreciate what joe did both as a player and manager. Do I think he was a better manager than David moyes? No I don't. I think he needed to be in charge for a longer period to be considered better than moyes for me.

Just to add I always respected him for showing some balls and resigning when he was not permitted to sign tore Andre flo. At least I think that's why he resigned from memory.

Because there isn't one, Royle was there for a short time and given money, Moyes was there for a long time and not given any money. Two very different prospects. The only thing the situation had in common was that they both turned the club around and were both good managers.
Royle>Moyes because he did well in the league and won a cup, how well he would of done under the same constraints and with the same level of opposition for the same period is simply guesswork.
By the time Royle had left and Moyes took over the damage was done by the following managers and board.

My memory isnt the best as most of the 90's is a haze, but if my memory serves me right, big joe came in in just as bad a situation as moyes did. and dont forget moyes was given the rooney money to re build with.

his 1st match was that derby at GP when we were rock bottom of the league.

Only because they've got Bilic in the wrong column.

It is £31.25m incomings

And £14.99m outgoings

A HUGE net spend at the time.

We even had "bids" for Collymore and (laughably) Shearer at the time.

nah not sure Bilic can be credited as a Joe Royle signing,

Toffeweb's got different dates for when he joined Everton

says March 97 on the transactions, and May 97 on the player profile,
we all know he stayed at West Ham until the end of that season

as far as I remember Peter Johnson himself conducted that transfer

Even if we take that off it is still £25m to spend in 1.5 seasons.

In those days you could buy a world class player for under £8-10m

everyone talks about moyes and what he did. Joe Royle did a fantastic job at everton. In 1994 we just survived we started terribly certainty to get relegated before he came in. He picked up some rangers players, got the defence drilled, bought in the dogs of war with class/pace on the wings.

Never gets mentioned what a great job he did. I was at portman road that night when we survived after going on a massive run to get out of trouble when we looked doomed. He won the cup same year.

He won at anfield, highbury, stamford bridge something moyes never did. He made us proud to be evertonians and won us our cup.

Royle could have done a better job had he got the same resources as Moyes.

He was a breath of fresh air when he arrived and for a while after when we won the Cup. Then it went a bit stale, not helped by Johnson and his dubious funding it should be added. Seem to remember us losing 6 league games on the bounce under JR.

But it seem that with the passage of time such things are forgotten and sentimentality takes over leaving a rosy picture of his tenure, probably because he was an ex-player and 'got' Everton.

His second full season was pretty awful but so was Moyes'.

Only Royle demanded extra funds and quit when they weren't there while Moyes didn't. So Moyes got the chance to bounce back and Royle didn't. We'll never know what would have happened if he'd sucked it up and stayed on with limited resources.

He didn't even complete a 2nd full season. If I remember correctly he resigned in March '97.

Four of Royle's five biggest signings (Ferguson, Speed, Kanchelskis and Barmby) were sold for profit, admittedly all but Kanchelskis after he left. Shows him to be somewhat astute, although it should be remembered Dunc was brought here on loan by Mike 'I'm just blagging this' Walker.

I don't know anyone who doesn't think Royle leaving in 1996-97 was one of the worst things that happened to us in the PL era.
