TBH I'd settle for him applying a level of critique; all we get at the moment is just regurgitated Mail and Telegraph content.

Wow, somehow in a thread about Biden, you haven’t mentioned Boris……..in respect of your comment, obviously we must all apologise if quoting (and identifying it as a quote) from newspapers or national broadcasters that you deem below your self attributed high brow standards or are not from The Guardian.…..I can only bow in respect of your worldly wise knowledge gained in your few years out of university…sorry……

You could do worse than go to university pete - you'd probably at least learn how to actually source quotes, and not to automatically believe everything you read in your papers.

I studied and gained various degrees at Liverpool University, Coventry University and Warwick University. In my spare time while travelling the world I also undertook a myriad of management and marketing post grads via a thing called the Open University. I have probably spent more time undertaking formal education than you have had years on the planet….best try again….

Unlikely pete, unless you spent your entire working life at all these universities you seemed not to have learned much at.

imagine if Trump was President and he handled it the same way: there'd be a hundred pages here damning him to hell.

Instead, there's barely two pages...that's proof of immense tribalisation of the news.

Trump got impeached for a phone call...if creepy joe doesn't for this deadly debacle then we really are in clown world.

You really don’t have a clue do you..anyway I will waste no more time responding to your childish off topic, insulting, and invariably stupid comments. Please enjoy your life of trying to score points on the Internet, but please allow me to converse with those with knowledge and a degree of experience without your incessant input…thank you….

I don't have a clue about how old I am? As for the rest - physician, heal thyself.

I love America, but having tried to put another side during the Trump years, I found it almost impossible to elicit any kind of rational responses to anything he did. Well there were honourable exceptions such as @verreauxi or @LinekersLegs or even @Ruairi77 on occasions. But what struck me was the vitriol and the level of animosity. even worse were the various Labour supporting Brits who also piled in. Of course when Biden emerged as victorious, all was well in the world. Until this absolute shitstorm in Afghanistan. Then the world went quiet, apart from the Brit Labour supporters still defending Biden and attacking Trump, even though both had completely messed this up.

Trump was an idiot, Biden is incompetent ……

There is a 90 page thread on Afghanistan where his handling of this is criticized by everyone, and you've posted in it repeatedly.

Strangely enough a peek in the vaults suggests there are barely two pages worth of mentions of the Taliban on the entire Trump thread (which is more than 2700 pages long), and only a handful where the withdrawal was discussed.

That's why they call it Trump Derangement Syndrome. It is quite insane, and it is most definitely a syndrome.

Even here in Berlin: Nov 2016, he had just won the election. Back then my office was at Alexanderplatz: i get off the train, leave the station to walk the few hundred meters to work and I see anti-Trump posters everywhere. Really nasty demonic sentiments too.

Of course, back in 2008 we saw those stylised Obama hope/change posters everywhere.

Tribalisation of politics...you're either with them or against them. Horrid stuff. I remember we criticised George W Bush for such polarising sentiments, now most of the planet is fully on board.

I blame smartphones for numbing/dumbing the masses, and post-millennial unis for the political indoctrination.

How do we reverse course, Pete?

No idea. There are those who can look at both sides or a debate, even while supporting one side, and there are those who will only countenance one side of a debate and refuse to even try to see the other side. Maybe it’s an age thing, I don’t know, but it seems that younger elements are less likely to look at both sides…maybe they’ll grow out of it, or maybe the planet is doomed to split into two……

Mind you the Germans really liked Obama. It was fairly obvious from the beginning that Trump was a bit more Anglophile…….

That subject-focus is Afghanistan, not Biden. Think of it like the thread on the Capitol riots.

The Derangement Syndrome doesn't work both ways.

That's because Trump did a good job: ensuring short/medium-term stability while providing the crucial end-date. He's on record many times that his administration would've first pulled out the civilians/equipment, then the army. It was a sound plan, and everyone of sound mind was happy with it.

Hence, no one here really mentioning it.

Biden did it all tits up. With serious consequences, for years to come. But as voting for him represented the anti-Trump vote he will likely get away with it (e.g. we now see the initially critical mainstream media easing off). Being anti-Trump is still influencing matters. Being anti-Biden clashes with that. That's what this intense tribalisation has done to our collective judgement.

I still half-expect an impeachment, mind. That would be a step in the right direction.

the Trump thread (which is more than 2700 pages long), .
see what i mean...and 99% all extremely critical. Yet during his run he achieved a bunch, here one commenter on another site put some together:

-----
accomplished lowest unemployment in 35 years, lowest minority unemployment in history, tax cuts for middle class, increase in wages, USMA, trade deals, brought back manufacturing, China tariffs, reduced trade deficits, Middle East peace deals, Abraham Accords, increased military strength, no new wars, Space Force, reduced the danger of conflict with North Korea, secured the border, decreased illegal immigration, fewer terror attacks, low gas prices, energy independence, lowered Americas greenhouse gas emissions while growing the U.S. economy, made allies pay their fair share, Three Supreme Court appointments, hundreds of federal judge appointments, delivered Covid 19 vaccine in record time etc
------

i also half-expect history to be kind to the Donald...but we first need that step in the right direction. Biden needs to be impeached.
