2025/26 Jarrad Branthwaite

Dan Burn will be a massive liability at the World Cup. The way he grabs and pulls players at set pieces, he’d be nailed on to concede a soft penalty.
He was a disgrace agains us, but gets away with absolute murder.

Not sure the World Cup refs will allow Sunday league alehouse tactics to go unpunished.

JB is many levels above burn, and a number of the other cbs that the jarhead will select ahead of him - mings, konsa etc. all yard dogs.

The partnership should be JB with Guehi - pure class.

We have missed JB hugely this season, who knows how high up we would be had he been fit.

For whatever reason, Branthwaite just doesn't seem to be under serious consideration for England (it appeared he wasn't always first choice for the U21s, either).

I don't think I'm the type to overrate our players - probably the opposite if anything - and I really don't understand what more they'd want from a centre-back. I'd have been looking to bed him in as soon as the last tournament ended.
I guess Tuchel just feels like they're overstocked with centre halves. Somehow Stones, who never plays, is ahead of Branthwaite, as is Quansah who is now at 6th in the Bundesliga Leverkusen. Guehi is an automatic pick, and Chalobah has been in the squad for quite a while now too. Konza is another automatic pick (although I don't rate him, looking at it objectively he's been a mainstay in Villa's defence and they're having a great season), so that's 5 centre halves already. Dan Burn (lol) has been in the squad a while too, which makes 6.

Then Branthwaite has been out for 6 months, so would need to be proving himself over a period before coming back into contention.

IMO he should definitely be in there over Quansah and Burn at a bare minimum. And he's clearly a better defender now than Stones is, who is past his best and backup at City. Better than Chalobah too. And Konza.

Haha.

IMHO the only chance he’s got is if he keeps scoring…..
he won’t get in on defensive form alone for the reasons you’ve listed, so he’ll have to do something outstanding like score 4 or 5 more while also defending staunchly and even then it’s doubtful.

Think he needs an injury or two to get in, imagine a red card and injury to his first choice two and you go into a q/final with Burn and Chalobah
