January Transfer Window 2026

Kind of. Its not going to be easy going for the young English players.

I do think we should be paying a premium for them because they can:

A: Have tremendous value upside
B: Form the long term nucleus of the squad.

So for the likes of Dibling and other U19, u21 English players its a smart long term play.
Why do they need to be english

I think we’d all love us to follow the Brentford / Brighton approach
For what it's worth I don't. The way they're run is designed to be a selling club. They have to work that way because they're small clubs with little history and small fanbases and that just isn't Evertons position in the football world.

The clubs we should be looking at for inspiration in my opinion are Aston Villa and to a slightly lesser extent Klopps Liverpool. Get a great coach with a proven winning system and iteratively buy players to maximise that system.

The issue with Dibling is that certain individuals on here are acting like he is some sort of wonderkid which was never the case, that then puts huge expectation on the player and when its not matched people start moaning. I live on the south coast and I know Saints fans who will tell you that they had Alcaraz higher up the pecking order than they ever did Dibling. He also has a bit of a languid, lazy style about the way he plays which used to drive them nuts and our fans have noticed it. Moyes hasn't helped the situation either tbf and the treatment of the lad has been very odd at times. I'm sure we all hope it works out for him in the long run.

Two responses here:

Ive grown up seeing top sides with a nucleus of English players.

At the minimum we had Chelsea (Lampard & Terry) and RS ( Carragher & Gerrard) and of course on a larger scale United & Arsenal.

Bearing in mind we currently have Moyes as manager i think this may be the way to go and again, personal opinion is that teams (no matter in what field of expertise) should have a local (Everton and England) flavour.

On the second point, the post i replied to was about Dibling. He is a 19 year old England u21 international.

Those types will always be more expensive than foreign players.

If we brought in a top class young manager who we were backing to build a dynasty, id immediately hope that we would have (in a squad of 25) 4-6 top class u21 English players to develop into starters.

Of course it may be unrealistic and very expensive but thats the game thesedays.

I think you’re being a little harsh on Brighton and Brentford.
They’re both now well established premier league teams, irrespective of their history.

Yes they need to make player trading profits to compete because they are not playing regular European football and have modest match day revenues but we’d do well to mirror their approach during this transitional period.

We shouldn’t hide away from the fact that we are starting from a low base (the squad needs huge investment) and as such we are 3-5 years away from competing for European football (assuming things go well which isn’t a given).

Sorry didnt reply to your quoted post.

He's been rated as a wunderkind since the u16s and beyond.

As youre on the South Coast then you'll know the coaches have been picking him for the England youth sides based upon his potential and technical ability.

Sure, hes not the 'typical' Everton player.

He's also not my 'typical favourite type' of player.

I love the all action guys like the Rino Gattuso, Jens Jeremies, Joe Parkinson types and then those who have a bit more to them like Gary Speed and suchlike.

However, I do love an English talent and as you probably remember I posted about Dibling and Rigg a year or so ago as 2 i wanted us to sign.

Why?

Because i do not see this premier league as being solely a closed shop.

I think with a new stadium and with our support we have the foundation for a top side.

If we have certain highly technical English players that can be moulded together with a long term style, and a strategy of development to enhance these players then we could see huge benefits.

I feel that the 'typical' prototype signings of today can be destroyed by the skillful players of yesteryear and that a blend of both can bring huge upside.

Sure, Dibling isnt a 'wonderkid' like those Foden and Nwaneri types, but hes certainly got the ability to be a superstar if we are able to develop him well.

Superstar??? We been watching different players ?

Let's break this down .....

We should pay a premium for young English players because they " have a tremendous value upside". I presume that you mean that English players when developed have a higher value than foreign players?

On the one hand I think that's debatable but on the other their is some merit because I do believe that English players are over valued . In fact that's why I wouldn't be shopping in the English market and it's interesting that the likes of Brighton and Brentford ( whose transfer expertise we aspire to ) hardly ever buy English players.

"Form the long term nucleus of the squad" . This really is a xenophobic view isn't it. It implies that foreign players aren't capable of bonding and creating team spirit. I totally reject that notion.

I think we should just buy good players. Personally I don't care if they are English , French or whatever.

I want the best players we can get at the best value.

You think Dibling represents good value , emphatically - I don't.

The only thing that forces Moyes to do anything outside his routine comfort zone is player and suspensions then he reverts
I think your missing the point.

We know how he works, but if a signing was made that forced him to change, than he's changed.

Their is no "reverting to type" in that scenario.
