January Transfer Window 2026

Its nice when someone takes a stand against the narrative

People love to say "insert manager" saved us from relegation when they never.

The main one that I had a gripe with was the absolute lie that allardyce saved us from relegation, when he took over in November(ffs) , when we were 13th(FFS).

The other is the CIRCLING the drain myth.
As is often said though, we all have degrees in hindsight. When Moyes joined we were 16th on 17 points and the two teams below us had 16 points. We were 1 point above the relegation places.

Dibling hasn’t offered us any more than Lindstrom offered us sadly. He may do in the future but right now when assessing his and our performances this season, we haven’t improved there. So actually in terms of quality that is as it stands, a like for like replacement, we’ve replaced an ineffective winger with no end product with another one, despite paying £35m for the privilege.

Barry replacing DCL is not a like for like replacement quality wise, but the other way around from the argument you’re making. I didn’t even rate DCL, but this club once again has managed to go out and find a player even worse while coughing up £30m for the privilege again.

Doucoure to KDH also isn’t like for like quality wise, we’ve clearly improved in that area as stated.

Harrison to Grealish is a temporary upgrade that we will have to address properly in the summer coming up.

Branthwaite being replaced in the starting line up by Michael Keane is as big a downgrade as I think is possible in Premier League football.

So when all of that is taken into account, actually, I think we have replaced the quality in the squad like for like from last season. It was a terrible transfer window, I said it at the time and I think it even more right now having seen the performances of Barry, Dibling and Rohl. I want the recruitment team sacked.
But again that's just ignoring the actual point being made to just keep parroting the same line. We can't just pretend that we didn't invest a significant amount of money (in relative terms) on improving the squad just because you don't think it's paid dividends. We could have just kept loads of the players we let go if we wanted to, but instead we chose to spend more money and bring in different players with a view to upgrading.
As I said in the first place, if that hasn't worked then questions obviously need to be asked about the people making the decisions.

I'm not saying we actually have a better squad, just that it's totally fair to say that we should have a better squad given the decisions we made. All teams partake in player trading, this isn't something that's peculiar to us, as i've already said Isak could score less goals for Liverpool this year than Nunez did last year but we wouldn't accept their fans saying 'well ackchooally we just replaced like for like so we were never likely to improve', because it would be ridiculous. The same applies here.

Regardless of the relative value of 100 mill plus, if this has been spent by a recruitment team with the aim of improving the squad, and it’s actually stayed the same or got worse, then that’s a terrible indictment on everyone involved.

For my own opinion I think if you offered any manager in the world last season’s group of players, or this season’s, they’d nearly all pick this season’s. The squad has improved, especially in midfield, but it’s still not really good enough or fit enough to significantly move the dial.

Perhaps if we’d ran the whole season with Branthwaite KDH Ndiaye and Grealish fit and available things would be different. But Everton can’t keep their top players fit and on the pitch together for any period of time so Branthwaite hasn’t featured and KDH will miss a good number of games at crucial periods, which just seems to be the Everton way. Ancelotti’s season fell apart in a similar fashion with two cup exits amongst an injury crisis.

Keep Patterson until the end of the season but aim to bring in another RB this window. We could do with the cover. Once Branthwaite is back we will have two first team CBs on the bench. It's time Aznou is part of the squad and is used to help see out games at LB.

Aznou is a funny one. For me, watching him, I have to question why he hasn’t had more minutes at left midfield. Grealish could easily move across to accommodate as Aznou clearly has something about him.

I absolutely saw why he’s not been trusted at left back though, just doesn’t look to have the physicality to play that role in the Prem. Given we needed genuine left back cover, it was a bizarre signing.
