January Transfer Window 2026

Is there an element Everton fans expectation doesnt match reality in the 3 games you mentiioned. Brentford are sitting 5th in the table and it doesnt look a fluke. They've scored more goals than liverpool villa and chelsea this season. Wolves just had a month of Arsenal liverpool and man united. all away games and every single one of them were close matches. Im a bit surprised why Everton are just expected to roll these teams over when clubs higher in the league never.
I know some dont want to hear it but i just think we're not that good. Average in terms of team and manager. Throw in our best few players not being available and it makes us even worse.
Most non Everton fans i know think we're a bit drab with crap forwards. I'm not sure there's a strong argument against that.
I think with Brentford, it is the bigger picture: they lose their best forwards and their manager and replace them with no names and are picked for relegation. Somehow they kick on and play good attractive football and get results. Here we talk about it taking " two to three seasons to see improvement" " be patient" " be realistic" " we're not the Sky 6"...nope, well somebody take a look at Brentford and maybe learn a thing or two instead of being told to " be grateful" yada yada...

But again that's just ignoring the actual point being made to just keep parroting the same line. We can't just pretend that we didn't invest a significant amount of money (in relative terms) on improving the squad just because you don't think it's paid dividends. We could have just kept loads of the players we let go if we wanted to, but instead we chose to spend more money and bring in different players with a view to upgrading.
As I said in the first place, if that hasn't worked then questions obviously need to be asked about the people making the decisions.

I'm not saying we actually have a better squad, just that it's totally fair to say that we should have a better squad given the decisions we made. All teams partake in player trading, this isn't something that's peculiar to us, as i've already said Isak could score less goals for Liverpool this year than Nunez did last year but we wouldn't accept their fans saying 'well ackchooally we just replaced like for like so we were never likely to improve', because it would be ridiculous. The same applies here.

Well that’s the point I’ve been making this whole time so what are we even debating here? At no point did I say we haven’t spent any money? I agree we should have a better squad, but we don’t, because our recruitment team are crap and completely messed up the window. I don’t understand where this debate is going, it looks to me like you just woke up today and fancied an argument.

Seven game unbeaten run when he took over. Not losing to the RS, doing the double over Newcastle.Maybe I'm just a glass half full type.
He wasn't a bad manager (even if I do dislike the style we played under him and his ego)
He was systematic of the chaotic period of our history. Spending crazy money on average/poor players.

Aznou is a funny one. For me, watching him, I have to question why he hasn’t had more minutes at left midfield. Grealish could easily move across to accommodate as Aznou clearly has something about him.

I absolutely saw why he’s not been trusted at left back though, just doesn’t look to have the physicality to play that role in the Prem. Given we needed genuine left back cover, it was a bizarre signing.
Isnt he bigger than baines?

We did, but we also needed to build a squad with one eye on the future.

If given the option this summer of signing a left back who could fill in right away, or one who might not be ready just yet, but could potentially be our starting left back for 5-6 years, I know which one 90% would have picked.

For years we’ve gone down the road of instant gratification signings (I use that term very loosely) and fell flat on our arse. I’m not gonna start now moaning at the club when players like Dibling and Aznou aren’t quite ready yet.

I mean i agree with that. Its the set up. Same as Brighton and Bournemouth to an extent. Players come and go but they either replace through the set up or they recruit straight away.
It goes under the radar a bit but they do spend money. They just tend to recruit wisely. Odd miss in the transfer market but they tend to get value for their money. Thiago at brentford was 30m. Atm he looks a bargain. Barry and beto look like they were scouted by someone with a white stick.
