January Transfer Window 2026

I assume these players are available then? I thought Tomiyasu had just joined Ajax on a free? Unless I'm getting my Japanese players mixed up? So be honest with me Furey how many of those top 3 have you seen play?

I can confirm that as a fella with a kid and full time job and in general, a life, I have not sat down and thoroughly scouted and analysed these players, mate.

The point I'm making isn't that we should sign the specific players I've listed. The point I'm making is that there are a lot of players out there who would improve on what we have for, relatively speaking, not massive fees.

One of the first players we were in for last summer was Tete at Fulham, was all but done, then Fulham offered him more money. These things happen, but it's mad that we haven't been seriously linked with a right back, since. Obviously, none of us are privvy to what goes on behind the scenes. In my opinion, they banked too much on being able O'Brien there for another season and focused on other targets, but I think now that has to end as it's affecting things at both ends of the pitch now, not just going forward.

Just examples I can see from good leagues would be:

All played at good levels, young, none of them would cost an arm and a leg.

Other than that, even if you go for experienced but unexciting players on loan like Tomiyasu or Maitland-Niles, neither are great, but literally anyone who is better than Patterson is an improvement.
Moyes thinks Juanlu is a midfielder

I don't think it's any coincidence that every right back we were linked with seriously until the very end of the last window was a free transfer or very low fee.

I think we prioritised that lower than the other positions we needed and weren't prepared to sink money into it util we reached the end of the window, had a clearer picture of what was left in the kitty and then made a couple of moves (which were unsuccessful).

True, but not when one is crocked and another is needed to play out of position at RB virtually every week.
Hopefully the surgery can help put the Branthwaite issue to bed, he should have just had it at the start of the season. With O’Brien he’s only played out of position because we have 0 actual right backs who are Premier League quality but the club seemingly don’t care about this.

If we didn’t have the time to sort a right back out on deadline day in the Summer (disgrace that we didn’t get one in) then we should have at least had one lined up to come in first thing in January imo.

He cant come out and say yes we're definitely going to sign 2, 3, 4 players can he?! He says we're looking and if we can we will do business that in itself is a million miles from pervious years of not being able to even think about signing new players.

Its so bizarre that fans think he can come out and say anything else.

Well, you say that...

...but he gormlessly said "9 or 10" in the summer.

Looked an absolute clown in doing so.

Why does he need to manage expectations though?

The expectation levels at the club hit rock bottom over the last few years. It's about time we tried properly to get better and be competitive again. We need a positive vision and urgency, not constant negativity and an acceptance of being a bit rubbish
Have you not read the posts on here? Our expectations are all over the place and range from we are going to get Champions league and Moyes is a legend one minute to he needs to go and we are useless the next. Similarly our signing expectations range from Ben White and Delap on loan to Wilson and Soucek.
I'm all for managers keeping their cards close to their chest and really hope that is what he is doing. More surprising is the lack of agent generated rumours, maybe the quieter agents are the ones he likes doing business with. Without hope then what is the point....
Also hope there is a bit of a siege mentality developing with the decisions going against us, our team and fans both need and thrive off that!
