I wouldn't be surprised if we have to do this every so often with him. I've been kind of waiting for something like this ever since it was announced we were getting him for nothing.

We may just be blaming this on VVD for convenience. I was half expecting him not to start the derby after what Ancelotti said about him needing to be on the bench if Colombia were to push him through multiple full 90s (and I believe they did).

He may simply need to rest after playing mid-week games as a rule to prevent recurring injuries.

Carlo could also obviously be telling the truth, but I am finding it hard to believe that he played on for 90 minutes with an issue bad enough for us to say he's missing out on a game 8 days later, this far in advance.

He won't play every game, of course he won't. Nothing to do with being injury prone, just perfectly natural for a 29 year old flair player that gets kicked mutiple times every game.

Regarding Carlo's statement, we are all guessing whether he will play or not, which means the Saints manager will also be guessing. He will have a game plan for if James plays, and a different plan if he isn't. So he has spent the past couple of days developing 2 plans and coaching 2 plans. Possibly even 2 lineups. Saints will not know how they are going to play until an hour before kick off, we have been working on our game plan all week. Advantage Everton.

I’d rather give him a rest Sunday and make sure he’s back 100% for Newcastle. Don’t want to take any chances with him, he’s too important. If he trains tomorrow and can do the full session then maybe take a punt.

If he's fit enough, play him. Play each game for the points available. He could get injured after 30 seconds against anybody we play.

Always the believer not to play unless close to 100%. The game is too quick and physical and can make the difference of missing one game to weeks or months. An odd game here and there rest if needed then the panel needs to step up. Richarldson out for 3 games is bad enough rather then james joining him.
