I don’t see the sense in going after James for the following reasons
1. We should be (and supposedly are) targeting younger hungry players who aren’t on inflated salaries
2. He doesn’t seem to fit into our formation. He’s not a dynamic wide player, and not a strong box to box midfielder, which we are crying out for (see the Chelsea game).
3. Similar to 2, in Ancelotti’s system he is most likely to replace Gomes. We have far greater need in other positions.
To me he has all the hallmarks of being an expensive but disappointing vanity project.
He’s not a centre midfielder, number 10 maybe. Imo he could comfortably play wide right, he averages better than a goal every 3 games at Madrid & Bayern.
And you can’t just target all young players, that basically becomes a gamble and a never ending project.
Unfortunately we aren’t able to attract the best
Players at the perfect age. 23/26. Or the world class youngsters.
So it’s trying to get the best 19/20 year olds we can, or pay for players like James or Allan.
Most of the middle age range players we have bought are either not good enough.
And this is only my opinion. Iwobi, Bernard, Keane. Or they still have question marks against them IE, Gomes, Mina, Pickford even digne hasn’t had a great 2nd season. And gbamin is still unknown.
