James McCarthy

I think that's the crux of it mate. You're of the opinion that we've bought another CM instead of a striker, I'm not sure that's right.

It looked like we were gonna spend on Gabbiadini as well, but something changed there, and Koeman or Walsh changed their mind on him. If there was no-one else available in January who is better than Valencia, they've decided against it.

I do get your point as about the Cm position, as I'm not really sure what our best 11 is at the minute. But it was good to look at the bench yesterday and have Gana, Davies, holgate, miralles all available.
I believe we are exposed upfront now. Maybe the decision was made that Schnedierlin is vital for next season and had to be bought now. And the other calculation was that if Lukaku did go lame as it we're then that is just a chance we'll have to take and that the season was pretty much over bar getting ourselves a boost of a place in any case. If we were seriously in danger of securing a top four slot then the Schneiderlin cash may have been switched to a decent forward. As Goat always reminds me, that first season of RMs was maybe spoilt by the decision to go on the cheap for a loan striker who then got injured and we never pushed the boat out on a top striker to stand in for the soon to be injured Lukaku.

Oh aye, we are definitely exposed up front. If Rom gets crocked, it's Enner or DCL, neither of who you'd fancy to score 1 in 2.

MS I see as bought looking to next year, with Barry having a much reduced role and probably one of Besic or McCarthy moving on for game time. But also the injury record of those 2 means they're probably the equivalent of 1 player in terms of availability.

Gotta hope Rom stays fit, and then throw a blank cheque at him in the summer.

This is the problem, we've got to hope Rom stays fit otherwise we are f*cked.

I'm chuffed Mcarthy is adding to the team a bit.. increases his value and teams should definitely have interest to buy him in the summer. Nothing against the guy just 5th choice in that position for me with 4 others having vastly more to their game .. so surplus.

Is James McCarthy starting to benefit from some tough love? That was the lingering Irish question from the Premier League weekend, after the 26-year-old marked his return to Everton's starting XI by contributing a goal and an assist in a chaotic 6-3 win over Bournemouth.

Ronald Koeman suggested last week that McCarthy still had a future at the club, detailing how they had rejected a move from Newcastle to sign him during the January transfer window.

However, there appeared to be enough evidence from the season to date to treat the Dutchman's comments with some scepticism.

Much as injury issues and the 'club v country' row involving Koeman and Martin O'Neill didn't help the Glaswegian before Christmas, it was clear that his new boss did not view him as an automatic starter.
That was a contrast from his comfortable position under Roberto Martinez. When Koeman worked hard to renew his association with Morgan Schneiderlin last month, the writing looked to be on the wall - hence Newcastle's attempts to test Everton's resolve with a £15m bid.

However, Koeman decided there was room for McCarthy in his plans and a successful recovery from his most recent spell on the sidelines has led to a jump up the pecking order. He was introduced as a half-time sub at Stoke in midweek and restored to the side for Saturday.

Granted, Idrissa Gueye's spell away at the African Cup of Nations has halted his momentum, yet it was noticeable that Koeman found room for Gareth Barry, Schneiderlin and McCarthy in the same formation at Goodison Park.

Martinez often spoke about the need for his protege to improve going forward, but the former Hamilton and Wigan man was mostly cast as a defensive operator.

A return of five goals in 100 league appearances for Everton before Saturday tells its own story, but Koeman has trialled the player in a more advanced position and, while there was an element of fortune in his goal, a clever touch for the first of Romelu Lukaku's four goals demonstrated that he can be creative.

McCarthy has always been a good athlete and he timed his run well for his own strike, benefiting from a favourable ricochet when his original attempt was blocked.

If he can hone that side of his game under Koeman then it will really benefit his development. He may have to if he wants to stay in his side.

He succeeded in outshining Harry Arter, who came back into Bournemouth's team and succeeded in getting off the mark for the season in the dying stages.

But the afternoon belonged to the hosts and, in a break from the norm this term, McCarthy was the pick of the Irish players in action in the top flight across the weekend.

He might be seeing in McCarthy a lot of what he saw in Davis at S'ton. He played him where he'd be tasked with doing a lot of graft but popping up in the final third to augment the attack.

Anyone with two eyes in their heads could see McCarthy has this forward thrust to his game but he;s been too busy bailing water from the bottom of the boat to be able to do it on a regular basis.

Think it's more than just that Dave, he seems to like him against teams that try to dominate possession and plays him higher up in order that we can pres higher (and in that role he does very well tbf), played him that way against the rs and it worked in disrupting them badly, first half against Bournemouth it did the exact same thing to them, can see him being in and out the starting lineup depending on what tactics and who the opponent is the rest of the season (btw don't think he was subbed for any other reason the other day than to try to ensure he didn't break down as he started tiring - which kind of hintes that the manager does want him available as an option for games coming forward)

Think the only every game starter will be Schneiderlin atm - as think effectively he will become the key player in starting everything of from the back, the rest are basically 3 (discounting Barry who i think is on borrowed time now) fighting for 1 or 2 spots depending on our formation

Like him or dislike - the one thing you CAN say about Koeman, is that as long as your still around the team, then if you show him enough he isn't too stubborn to see that and to give the chance to show him you deserve the games.

A trait which will serve any younger players hugely well in terms of them getting there chances

Schneiderlin: isn't he a game specific player though? I'd say it would be less sensible to play him against a lot of teams who stand off and are compact. Schneiderlin is at his best when screening a back four and/or punishing pressing teams by releasing the ball long in behind them/out wide behind attacking FBs.

The issue for me with Koeman and his CM fetish is that we have a lot of players who do specific roles and the only constant will be Gueye.

He's playing well at the moment. We're a bit overloaded in central midfield but maybe if we qualify for the Europa League it'll make sense to keep him? If not then we should get about £20m in the summer for him.

McCarthy was good value on Saturday. One wonders why he hasn't come up to the mark before.

Tough love? He must be a more sensitive soul than he looks!
