James McCarthy

Right now I put him second in terms of best in CM positions we have behind Gueye.

I know they differ in style a bit but the current pecking order is, for me:
Gueye
McCarthy
Davies
Barry
Schneiderlin (which obviously changes a bit if he makes an impact)

That has to be blended into two starters for me though as i hate seeing three on the pitch at the one time, its coward's football to have three deep lying midfielders in the centre of the park. I'd go with Gueye/Davies or McCarthy/Davies. Either would be a good blend. Gueye plus McCarthy is a no go, imo.

I think it's ver hard to choose between McCarthy, Gana, Davies and Schneiderlin. They all offer different things. Because of the inbalance in the squad I can see us playing 3, maybe it's cowards football but I suppose it's pragmatic for where we are.

I could even see us playing all 4 of the above together in a diamond with Davies pushed on and Ross off Lukaku in some of the tougher games. I'm delighted with the depth, and think we are stronger than anyone else in the country in that area. It's a great time to be watching us!

davies is much better technically and on the ball, isn't even a question for me.

Mccarthy offers pressing and high intensity play thats about it.

We have a surplus of players chasing too few places. Basically we've painted ourselves into a corner on how we can set up in terms of other (non-CM) units in the team. It's not always true about those things being a good headache to have.

I wouldn't sell him. Still has a lot to offer. Not a regular starter but a definite, quality squad player. Especially when Barry leaves.

Which is why the chances are both McCarthy and (possibly) Besic will be moved on in the summer, and if McCarthy can keep his form high then the value of him will be high.

This is not me saying that the manger wants shut of him, doesnt rate him etc dave, its just reality, he has brought in two players in Gana and Schneiderlin, Davies has come on and looks a star of the future (and now) and Barkley is finally starting to show serious signs that his overall game is finally getting those peices added to it that he's always seemed to lack, Will McCarthy be willing to accept that he's liely gonna be behind all 4 come next season - yes he would still see a lot of game time, as Koeman does rotate his cm's and does like to sub there as well to keep the itnensity throughout the game high and for tactical reasons, but is McCarthy at a point where he wants to be playing week in week out for a team as a guaranteed starting 11 player?

Obviously if we qualify for europe it will have a huge impact on the depth of squad we will look to build for next year

Come on. Having too many good players is not really a problem. Or at least it's a damn sight better than the problem of not having enough good players.

When you look at the top teams they always have quality on the bench to change a game. Sometimes players of £20m+ sat on the bench, which we've never been able to dream of.

The only difficulty will be Koeman keeping players happy who aren't getting as much game time as they would like. If that turns into a major problem, they'll agitate for a move, and problem solved.

We'll have exactly this problem getting a backup for Rom (on the basis that we keep rom next year). Getting a quality player who is happy to sit on the bench is difficult, but the alternative is having a bench full of sub-standard players.

I dont know, maybe. I know we laboured for years with Moyes and his purchase of utility players to make a threadbare squad stretch, so it feels like carping now that we have a glut of talent in one position. But I reiterate my point that we have finite resources, regardless of the Moshiri funding spin. We have to look across the first team and make the right decisions on where it is needed most.

I think that's the crux of it mate. You're of the opinion that we've bought another CM instead of a striker, I'm not sure that's right.

It looked like we were gonna spend on Gabbiadini as well, but something changed there, and Koeman or Walsh changed their mind on him. If there was no-one else available in January who is better than Valencia, they've decided against it.

I do get your point as about the Cm position, as I'm not really sure what our best 11 is at the minute. But it was good to look at the bench yesterday and have Gana, Davies, holgate, miralles all available.

Gana and Schneiderlin are better defensive midfielders, Davies and Barkley are better central/attacking midfielders. Barry and Besic will be fine backups.

McCarthy is an alright player. Always nice to have substitutes and rotation options, but if we can get 15mm+ for him, would not be surprised if we invest it elsewhere.

I think McCarthy has shown a surprising amount of usefulness going forward in these past couple of games. With little flicks he has put multiple players in, and with his goal and assist in this game, I'd say hes better going forward than either Gana or Schniederlin. I think its likely Koeman may keep trying out McCarthy and Davies in advanced positions.
