hes had one decent season at the top level in his career. sure give him a pay rise too.

He had one excellent season and was doing well in his second season before the injuries started.

Gana has had an excellent half a season.

Let's hope he keeps it going over the next couple seasons otherwise the MacCarthy haters will be turning your pitchforks on him.

Short and/or selective memories, some of you chaps.

Yup

There's lots of fair weather McCarthy fans who abandoned ship when he needed them most

Gana will suffer the same sadly

We can't help ourselves

mccarthy has been given 2.5 seasons to sort his form out. by any stretch on the imagination thats a lot of patience. he'd be binned long ago at most clubs.

Not just form is it mate?

He's been injured and was playing for a tactically inept manager

He's deserved a chance to show what he can do under Koeman and by and large he's done well

He just needs to stay fit and he'll be a good option in midfield

So called fans abandoned him in their masses

2.5 yrs is still a long time to get your injuries and form sorted then any way you look at it. hes been well paid in that time and we're not a charity.

He's a decent enough player but the top clubs have players that can perform his role and give something extra on top.

If we aspire to be with them then I don't see how he can stay. I wouldn't mind keeping him for cover for any injuries or rotation against weaker teams but I doubt he would be happy with that.

he was 19 when he went to west brom and started 20 PL games. loftus cheek shouldnt even be mentioned in same sentence as lukaku come on.
Haha, I never said they were in the same bracket abilty wise. Didn't realise he started so many games though.

My point was we shouldn't necessarily turn down potential loan deals on talented youngsters solely because we'd be developing other team's talent. In Lukaku's case it worked very much in our favour.

I like McCarthy. He is starting quality for a mid table side which is not what we aspire to be. The lad wants first team football rather than being a bench player for a top team. Fair play to him for wanting to play the game, i can respect that.

He will need to leave to get what he wants, but i respect his reasoning and hold no grudge. He should also fetch a reasonable fee which will allow us to reinvest in the squad.

I don't think it is abandoning McCarthy Mikey. I don't think he is the player Koeman wants in his midfield(we have just signed a very good player that Mourinho didn't want in his team, it isn't always a reflection on the player). I think McCarthy is too good a player to be a bit part player only getting cup games, sub appearances or games because of injury or suspension.

In addition, it looks as if we are spending serious money in this window and the club will want to recoup some of that and McCarthy is probably the best chance to make a good fee.

Sometimes a player just isn't what the manager wants for his team.

What makes you think that? Besic has shown glimpses of quality, but then has ended up injured for large periods. Similarly McCarthy has also been very injury prone this last 2 years. I think this could see both of them surplus to requirements beyond this season.

Comparing the 2 in the last 3 seasons for appearances:

McCarthy:

14/15: 34
15/16: 35
16/17: 7

Total: 76

Besic:

14/15: 20
15/16: 11
16/17: 0

Total: 31

McCarthy has been far more dependable.
They've both been injury prone, but Besic is younger and imo has more to his game.
