Long term I think Barkley, Davies and Besic are better options. Barry can fill in short term if we're desperate. I expect Gana and Schneiderlin to start whenever they're available anyway though.

What makes you think that? Besic has shown glimpses of quality, but then has ended up injured for large periods. Similarly McCarthy has also been very injury prone this last 2 years. I think this could see both of them surplus to requirements beyond this season.

Comparing the 2 in the last 3 seasons for appearances:

McCarthy:

Besic:

Total: 31

McCarthy has been far more dependable.

I'd be happy with him, Schneiderlin, Davies and Gueye for those the 2 central midfield positions. They've all got decent engines.
