James McCarthy

Our James is one of those 'nothing' players. Coaches armed with opta stats can evaluate and justify inclusion, but us laypeople;we just cannot see it.

I'm certainly not one of McCarthy's biggest fans, but I thought he was easily our best midfield player in the second half.
Think this is called "damning with faint praise".

With Ireland he's been excellent when given the sole defensive midfield role and more attacking players ahead of him - eg. Germany, Italy. When he has to roll up his sleeves and not listen to more 'experienced' players like Barry and Glenn Whelan he's excelled. When expected to playmake he's repeatedly shown he's not up to it, not his game and likely never will be.

Think the plan initially was to have him more advanced to try and 'press' Watford back. Thing is he just let it bypass him as always.

Second half he improved and did at least look to get forward.

No point moving him on unless a big enough offer comes in though given Gana will be off to AFCON, and we need another CM as it is.

Davies would make more effort than this excuse.

Maybe Koeman was giving him a final chance to impress. Another expensive error in the end.

We would get what we paid back for him.

Also he wasnt an error at all. He was really good in his first season, got injured and has never been the same. He was brought back way too early and has never had a solid run of games since.
