Jack Rodwell

He got an absolute ton of credit for being relatively composed on the ball for someone his age. He could also throw in the odd impressive slide tackle. That really was about it from him.

To make it in the premier league you have to progress from there. Injuries haven't helped, but he hit his peak at 17 and was never really that talented, for me. Nor did he have anything like the physical attributes people said he did.

Moyes ruined Rodwell by not giving him a position and hanging him out to dry in positions it was obvious he was never capable of playing. He had him play Right Wing at 1 point, as he did with lots of players who weren't right wingers, or even wingers... or even midfielders for that matter.

He also forced him to alter his natural positive approach to games, as he did with lots of players. He started out, as you rightly say, shooting from long range, scoring a few screamers in the process, and making surging runs from midfield, ala his goal against Utd, both qualities Moyes frowned upon. After scoring a late, long range winner against Birmingham one year, Lee Carsley stated in his interview that he was pleased it went in as Moyes had told him to stop shooting from long range, something I'm sure wasn't restricted to Carsley.

After very visibly becoming more Conservative, and choosing the safe, sideways pass after being made an example of on numerous occasions, Rodwell no longer showed any of the qualities that had initially made him stand out, and instead, became just another "sitter" like Neville.

After joining City, he actually got a bit of that back, scoring some quality goals, but he found it hard to dislodge Toure in the City midfield, as you can imagine, and combined with some niggling injuries, which were rooted in playing when he shouldn't have for us in years previous, as was the case with a lot of our younger players, he became surpluses to requirements as City continued to strengthen and improve.

Sunderland was the wrong move for him, and I always felt he should have come back here and tried to convert to the Centre Half he was initially earmarked to be. Him and Stones could've made quite the partnership, both being comfortable ball playing defenders, both physically imposing, athletic and quick.

Its sad that he is reduced to this now, but as someone stated earlier in the week, it surprises me that more players don't have similar experiences. They get so much so quickly, and the motivation to play must be very hard to ignite, especially when playing poorly for a poor team. It takes a certain kind of mentality to become a top player, regardless of ability, which is why it's not always the best or most talented players that succeed, rather those that knuckle down and have a single minded stubborness to always play and improve.
Ha Moyes did not ruin his career!!!
He gave him his debut, gave him premier league experience and sold him to the richest club in England all by the time he was 21.
Jamie vardy was still stacking shelves at his age

I think he could do better than the French crab who is so bad I haven't even bothered to learn how to spell his name.

Big Sam knows him. More points to prove than an earnest hedgehog.

Free transfer.

Maybe it's the sentiment in my heart or the substances in my bloodstream but I say get him back.*

*I reserve the right to burn this post in Monday morning.
I'd save this post to read out in your 12 steps programme to show how whacked out you were at your lowest point.

What an enormous amount of tosh. Moyes ruined players ffs. Yeah Moyes ruined world class talents like Carsley and Rodwell, of course he did.
‘Found it hard to dislodge Toure’. ROFL
‘Scored some quality goals for City’. - only ever scored in one game for them. A Home defeat to the mighty Norwich in an end of season dead rubber.

Well, to start with, I never said he ruined Carsley's career, and i never said either was world class. As for laughing at him failing to dislodge Toure, it's a valid point, being he signed for a team where his route in to the team was hampered by a number of world class players, similar to the way that Jeffers insane belief he would get game time ahead of Bergkamp, Henry, Kanu and Wiltord was massively overconfident and only resigned him to small amounts of game time at a key point in his development. The same can apply to a lot of these poorly advised young players who make big money moves to teams with large squads littered with international stars. It's almost like you expect the people to advise them to have their best interests at heart, instead of their own monetary gain.

He did give him his debut at 16, he did give him premier league experience, and he did sell him to the richest club in the country, all before he was 21. You are completely right. And I would suggest that these things may have actually hampered his career, you may think differently. From a financial point of view, in a short space of time, he did well out of it, but now it appears, 6 years later his career has stalled massively, and at the heart of it, these reasons have factored heavily.

Early exposure, playing in unfamiliar positions, playing through multiple injuries and being rushed back from them, signing for team that he realistically had no chance of getting game time for, and never really nailing down a position or a consistent run of games to grow as a player have left him where he is now.

I will admit that maybe I overstated the "Moyes ruined his career" bit, and it may on reflection be a little harsh, but I certainly thing the way Moyes managed a number of our younger players had an impact on the careers they eventually had.

Rodwell, Baxter, Vaughan and Anichebe were all thrown in very early with not a hint that they were ever as ready as Rooney was, and each of them played regularly when injured, were asked to fill in bizarre positions (Baxter at right back at least once, and all the others deployed in Right/left wing on several occasions). They are now all now in very similar positions.

They have all made money beyond most of our wildest dreams, but whether they have had good careers is very definitely up for debate.

Other youngsters like Mustafi and Barkley were equally poorly managed by him. You can argue the case all you like, it's just my opinion and I'm welcome to it.

I think the problem with Rodwell is he was clearly talented at 16 and they wanted to get him in the team somehow. Up until that point he had been a centre back but given his age Moyes was never going to trust him there so he was shoe horned into being a midfielder. This meant he had to learn a new position whilst being in the first team. Probably in hindsight he would have been better served by playing a bit longer at youth level where his errors wouldn't have been punished so severely. He may well still have been converted to midfield but he may have learned to take games by the scruff of the neck instead of being a passenger. If he stayed as a centre back it would have meant when he was ready for that position he would have been introduced in a position he was comfortable with.

They love him up in Sunderland.

Just the sort of crap waste of space we need to drive us on to greater things. Why not bring back McGeady as well ? Oh and Gibson has been freed by Sunderland. Wow! I have probably forgotten a few more "never was and never will be former players."

Luckiest footballer in history. Bang average and a multi millionaire, he’s stolen a living.

Think of the many far more talented lower league footballers that never get a Jamie Vardy type break. They end their careers largely unknown and with little money from the game.

We have a habit of promoting youth players to the first team that they wouldn’t get at any other club as they are not good enough. With less money to buy quality needs must, so youngsters are thrown in. This fella was not only given a chance here, he was then talked up by the English media as being quality (common for English players) after scoring a goal against Man U. The Qatiri funded City compounded things by throwing away money in buying him (they forked out a fortune on pap early on), this earned him a huge whack, City discover he’s [Poor language removed], Sunderland then further compound things by buying him, likely doing so because “if City bought him he must have something”, he plays for them and is the worst player in what is probably the worst team in the PL era, and sees him break a record for most appearances in a team without winning a game. They are skint but can’t get rid of him.

There could be a film made about him.
