2025/26 Jack Grealish

I don’t know why every single Everton manager we have had since Royle seems to have an aversion to playing two pacy wide players. It’s one of the most fundamental ideas in football history to spread the pitch, press the ball, provide options on the counter, and beat fullbacks one on one, meaning the opposition sit deep, yet Everton manager after Everton manager are obsessed with stacking the team with slow inside forwards who like to drift infield.

Grealish Ndiaye McNeil Bernard Pienaar Osman Cleverley Siggurdson James - some good players in there but not an ounce of pace anywhere.

The fundamental if crude answer to that question is simply this: ambition...and a limited supply of it.

Smith actually narrowed the pitch when he arrived at GP!! and Moyes preferred to limit our wide attacking option to the left flank with Baines and Pienaar while deploying (until Seamus) a more pedestrian FB.

Both of those were dour men more interested in respectability and survival here than pushing us up the pitch leaving potential gaps.

We had 15 years of those two divvies before the windows were thrown open and Martinez added pace into the attack. Then we went backwards again with the exception of players like Digne.

The lessons from 13/14 where these in my view

Pace and quality in attack, 2/3 of the Belgian national team front line plus Deulofeu.

Pace power and technique in midfield. Barkley and McCarthy could put it on anyone that season, home or away they got on top of teams.

A back 4 that can play across the full pitch. Baines Coleman Distin Jags Stones. All absolutely lightning.

We could play teams off the park if we wanted to but then you see the counter attack goals at St James Park or at Swansea. The direct free kicks from Baines Mirallas Barkley.

Now we barely have a bloke who can take a corner properly and have zero pace anywhere on the pitch and continue to buy slow ponderous central midfielder after slow midfielder.

Zero lessons learned from what was a blueprint for success if it had been carried on. That team was a top left winger, an upgrade on Barry, and a top partner for Stones away from being a top top team.

The other thing was that - apart from Lukaku (who's fee was settled later at the end of the season IIRC) - that team was assembled with not that much money spent on it.

Iraola has got B'mouth into pole position for a Euro spot this season after selling a lot of talent last summer and even the January.

You can get a long way in this PL if you have power, pace and a bit of gumption about how you use both.

I like Grealish, but FFS we have to get past this culture of rewarding veteran characters because they do a lot of good PR stuff.

Teams can carry one player without pace. If we want to build a side around Grealish he has to be at 10 with three flyers ahead of him to stretch the game and two monsters behind him to cover the ground he’ll leave.

Putting him ahead of the slowest left back in the world, with McNeil Ndiaye KDH and Garner around him is pointless. Unless we walk the ball through a team we’ll struggle to beat any decent side.

Grealish should be in the squad. He is everything we need. He's still got it and with better help he could do so much more. The key is to change his circle of “mates “ , and Moyes needs to sit him down and explain what a true friend is. Meanwhile agents need to do their thing, but the numbers can’t cripple us.

Another loan would be amazing business but he has 1 year left on his deal so not sure why City would agree to that. Unless it was a sizeable loan fee and most of his wages off the books. Honestly cant see any teams wanting to spend a decent fee on him and from what I read when he signed, he wanted to stay put where he lives. I think we have a big advantage in negotiations.

If we are signing him, we need to do it early so we know whats left to spend and also it will help attract players.

What players is having Grealish going to attract?

We're talking those English lads over 29?

He's got no pace and slows the play down.

He's not our best left winger.

What does he bring to a slow team that needs to be effective on the transition?

= Wins free kicks and puts in the defensive work.

If we sign him then we need:

KDH as an 8.
Dibling as a 10.
A quick attacking left back.

3 things Moyes probably wont have.

Grealish staying another year may make other players who may have doubts about coming to us, actually come to us

He also keeps the ball and passes to a man which takes so much pressure off. But you are right he needs surrounding with an attacking full back.

He also gives the kids in the city a star to get on the back of their shirt. Someone to want to grow up to be like. We don’t have nearly enough of them.

Whatever you think about him as a player, he is a huge name and has won the lot.

Plus he is genuinely a top top player. Yes he doesnt have blistering pace but he's so good on the ball. And to bring the best out of your best player (if he signs), you compliment his skills by signing a quality pacey LB. Same with Ndiaye and the RB situation. It will take them both up a level here.

Mykolenko it is, then.

So which players out of the clubs reach would now sign based on Grealish joining?

No problem with him signing as a squad option as its cheaper than buying a replacement. But he needs to be a backup next season.

You say that like we are trying to sign Nuno Mendes or something. I didnt mean out of the clubs reach. Obviously I meant within reason. We have a list of attainable targets and Grealish will be an extra pull, as will the new ground, as will a decent finish this season. Each one on its own may be small but they add up to make us more attractive to players who will consider coming here.

There will always be players out of reach, even if we went and signed the best player in the world.

Good post. I like him too. But the obsession with signing him at any cost on here is nuts.

There's no rush. City are desperate to get shut and no other side is paying the wages we've been paying - not even close.

I just can't remember the games this season where I've thought 'yeah got to keep him'.

But then again Pep did ruin him 🙄
