Jack Charlton. Rip.

He could have done alot better with the players available, but it was our first time at a world cup and got to the quarters so people were quite happy. Ireland will never have that many top/world class players come along at the same time again.
Add to your list the few connected with the RS who were all very good too Steve Staunton, Ronnie Wheelan and John Aldridge.

I tend to agree mate, he was very fortunate with the players available and i dont think he even played the style to get the most out of them, particularly the midfield. At the time we were drunk on the jump in relative success, but that team was loaded with super talent and should have done better and maybe would have under different management.

Still though enjoyed it all thoroughly from an emotion point of view and he will go down in lore, RIP Jack.

Aye, I didn't realise the level of player we had until I was much older. But still, amazing memories. I remember watching the Romania match in our next door neighbours, and the entire estate basically charging out of their houses when Bonner made that save

The scenes were just mad and it was an amazing time in the country. He will always be remembered for that and we will thank him for those memories. But with a cold analytical eye we had serious players, better then just lumping it forward and putting teams "under pressure". Some decisions were odd though, Brady out of squads and Dave O Leary was a serious quality footballer to.

Hes an icon now for the times he gave the country but we had a squad to match anyone in Europe at that time, yet it was sold as plucky mentality all built of canny Jack, if im honest i think Jack never got the best out of the quality we had, he fell on his feet really with the quality of player who came through. Not dismissing his memory in anyway, the times in the country were great.

Roy Keane agrees with you mate.

He was right to mate, its been proven as well with whats gone on this year with The FAI. Disgusting and a disgrace.

I went to the majority of games under Charlton young as i was in Landsdowne, but i have never steped foot in the new Avivia for an Irish football game, i knew what was going on in the FAI for years - massive corruption - wouldn't give them my money.

I know nothing about all of that, but Keane didnt allude to it in his book. Sounds interesting!

Essentially Irish football had to be bailed out by the government because of this:

Its the tip of the ice berg and corruption has been going on for years. What disguts me about the whole thing is Clubs over here went to the wall and wound up in communities, players lost wages, for less owed then the FAI were paying Delaney's rent.

An absolute scandal.

I remember watching the Ireland England game (euro 88) in Bootle when I was about 10. All the kids on the street gave me crap before the game about how England would wallop Ireland. Straight after the game the same kids told me they were for Ireland because of the Liverpool players. I remember this cementing my Everton support!
