Some of my most fond childhood memories are of Euro 88 and especially the 90 world cup, the whole country in party mode .. great times.
The thing that is forgotten is how good some of the players they actually had were, all the talk is of long ball football and Jack playing players who once had a guinness but McGrath, Irwin, Sheedy O'Leary and others were all top class players.

Only knew of him as the Irish manager, who seemed to love him. Certainly knew how to put a team together and got them performing to the best of their ability, something his home nation has lacked over decades until very recently. Captured the spirit of football for me, passion above anything else.

He could have done alot better with the players available, but it was our first time at a world cup and got to the quarters so people were quite happy. Ireland will never have that many top/world class players come along at the same time again.
Add to your list the few connected with the RS who were all very good too Steve Staunton, Ronnie Wheelan and John Aldridge.

Ray Houghton and a young Roy Keane as well.

In fairness mate in 1990 they lost 1.0 to the host nation Italy with players like Maldini, baresi, donadoni, Baggio and ancelotti. Not sure how much better they could have done in that tournament.
