Jack Charlton. Rip.

RIP. Always came across as a proper genuine bloke whenever I saw him on TV, apparently he'd have time for anyone who wanted to talk to him.

People seem to forget he had a fantastic playing career in his own right. Won 2 league titles, an FA Cup, a League Cup and of course the World Cup. Over 450 top flight appearances, 35 England caps and Footballer of the Year for 1967.

I was primary school whenever Jack was bringing us on new adventures. I remember being aware that the morning radio would greet us with another lost life as we had breakfast. It was normal.

Then we had ‘Ole Ole Ole’. All of a sudden we had a party on TV and everyone buzzing about the football. Jack’s beautiful smile was everywhere and we were going places.

He gave us hope and distraction in horrible times.

As an adult I have many times revisited his legacy on YouTube and a million people on the streets of Dublin to applaud his team showed the love we had for the man.

I shed a tear today for Jack and it feels personal. A man I wasn’t lucky enough to meet but like so many other Irish people, he defined my childhood.

I said this in the dead thread. But i'll say it here as well.

A great manager for Ireland, and a fine manager for Sheffield Wednesday as well.So those two things, cancel out any Leeds associations.A fine player he was for them as well.He gave Leeds many years of loyal service. Both himself and Bobby seemed to be such opposite characters.Rip Big Jack, this is a sad day for all of us, with fond memories of those ireland sides, that played in euro 88 and the world cups in 1990 and 1994.

A great manager for Ireland, yes brilliant brought some great moments for the great Irish fans, fine manager for Wednesday? not really, can you tell us about any achievements there? cancel out any Leeds associations, honestly what does that mean?

.btw your reply to me on the Jack Charlton thread was very childish and disrespectful.

Please point out to me and everyone else where my post regarding Jack Charlton has been either childish or disrespectful, I am challenging your statement regarding his club management at Sheffield Wednesday one of the many clubs you support, I merely asked if you could tell me any of his achievements there after you stated he'd been a fine manager for them.

Is that being disrespectful?

Saying his achievements with Ireland cancels out his association with Leeds, after 23 years single club service, regardless of whether you like the club or not, now thats disrespectful.

With respect, can you two knobheads take your petty childish squabbles elsewhere?

Thanks,

Hi Tommye also with respect merely challenging a statement which I don't agree with as you do elsewhere.

Not being disrespectful to the guy, great servant to his club, had his adopted country punching way above their weight, got the best out of his players at international level but wasn't anything above ordinary at club level.

Didn't know it was being knobhead behavior or being childish to disagree with someone, I've noticed you do it occasionally yourself.

Petty squabbles with the other soft shîte in a thread to pay tribute to a dead man.

In my book that qualifies you both as a knobhead.

As a teenager and into my 20s I never missed a home game.
I was one of the 12000 that saw Aldridge finally get his first goal against Tunisia.

When we drew England on the 92Euro qualifiers I could not get a ticket for Wembley but discovered a number of tw@ts who had no interest had got tickets from business pals in FAI.

That finished me with the international scene. I support Rovers and it sickens me that the League champions get less than a third of what Delaney was on as prize money.

Disgusting crowd of self serving boors.

Give it a lash Jack

some of my favourite memories as a child were those tournaments under Jack. Amazing times as a kid.

strangely one of my strongest memories is of the warm up for US94 where we beat Germany and Holland. I’m not going to google that and hope I am remembering properly. Gary Kelly scoring in Germany I think. He let us loose to play a bit of footy and we weren’t half bad!

Colin Harvey of Everton recalled that “an air of menace pervaded the ground”. Jack Charlton never looked forward to playing at Goodison viewing supporters there as “the worse before which I have ever played…..there always seemed to be a threatening attitude”.
Sounds about right

The thing that is forgotten is how good some of the players they actually had were, all the talk is of long ball football and Jack playing players who once had a guinness but McGrath, Irwin, Sheedy O'Leary and others were all top class players.

Also players like Stapleton, Whelan, Houghton, Aldridge and he didn't even bring the great Liam Brady to the 1988 Euros. The difference between those Irish squads and todays bunch is night and day.
