I am trying to decide which has been the worst run organisation, the DUP or EFC. Both has been led by the same general ethos for approximately 25 years and are in a complete mess. One seems to have left itself no option but to make the place ungovernable so that the Republic won’t want us and the other seems to have made the place unsellable so that they can keep there posts. Discuss.

The protocol is a smokescreen....the real prize for the DUP/Orange Order is the destruction of the good Friday agreement.

I don’t believe they are naive enough to believe they can do away with the GFA and have a return to a hard border and majority rule at Stormont. They must know that something will have to replace the GFA and they are in a much worse negotiating position than they were 25 years ago. I think they have realised they have mislead the unionist people and they are now burying their heads in the san. Every negotiated solution ends in a United Ireland, indeed every un-negotiated solution ends in a United Ireland, they need to start taking responsibility and get the best deal possible for their constituents long term, personally I would be going for a federal state based on the provinces.

It's not naiveté that defines and drives their perception of the world.

I saw the potential reference to the “Windsor” deal.

That the Tories would get Charlie boy onboard to flog their slop, only confirms that they are one and the same gang.

I suppose the fact that the DUP then have to buy the deal, because their king recommends it, suggests that it ain’t gonna be what they wanted.

Johnson and the ERG then left publicly fighting against Charlie is deffo a popcorn event.
"I inaugurate it with deep-felt hope, and I feel assured that you will do your utmost to make it an instrument of happiness and good government for all parts of the community which you represent.

This is a great and critical occasion in the history of the Six Counties, but not for the Six Counties alone, for everything which interests them touches Ireland, and everything which touches Ireland finds an echo in the remotest parts of the Empire....

I am confident that the important matters entrusted to the control and guidance of the Northern Parliament will be managed with wisdom and with moderation, with fairness and due regard to every faith and interest...

Full partnership in the United Kingdom and religious freedom Ireland has long enjoyed. She now has conferred upon her the duty of dealing with all the essential tasks of domestic legislation and government; and I feel no misgiving as to the spirit in which you who stand here to-day will carry out the all important functions entrusted to your care...."

Part of George V plea to Unionists in 1921. Craig and his ilk gave the speech not a second thought.

Could Sinn Fein completely left side the DUP and suspend their abstentionism policy for one issue and take up their seats to vote in support of the Prime Minister’s deal provided he gives the House a vote. This would put to an end the impression that the people of Northern Ireland don’t want the Protocol in some form or other. With Alliance, SDLP and SF MPs outvoting the DUP in the mother of parliaments it would deliver a very strong message.
SF lobbied hard for the DUP to nominate a Speaker in Stormont to allow Daithe’s law to go through so they obviously agree with taking up your seats on a single issue basis.
Wouldn’t that be an interesting position to adopt in these very interesting times.

What is this new deal?

Likely this in a nutshell:

Why does the Protocol need to be changed?

The Protocol agreement, signed by Boris Johnson in 2020, saw checks on goods entering Northern Ireland from Britain begin taking place at ports in the North to avoid a hard border on the island of Ireland.

The DUP has maintained that this is causing Northern Ireland to be treated differently to the rest of the UK and wants the checks removed.

It is also calling for a change in what it calls the “democratic deficit” of Northern Ireland being subject to EU rules while not having a say on them.

Currently, the European Court of Justice (ECJ) can take action against the UK if it believes that EU law is not being respected in Northern Ireland.

In order to ease checks on goods, the UK government wants to impose a two-lane system for goods entering Northern Ireland.

A green lane would be for goods intended for Northern Ireland only which would be exempt from customs checks, while a red lane would be for goods going to the Republic and the rest of the EU, which would undergo checks.

What will the new Protocol deal contain?

While negotiators have remained tight lipped over what is contained in the agreement between the UK and the EU, it is understood that an easing in checks will be included in the revised deal.

In January, both sides agreed to a data-sharing arrangement which would allow the EU access to the UK’s IT systems for trade data, hailing it as a key step in moving forward to solve the Protocol row.

This is expected to be used as part of the check-free lane of goods coming from Britain into Northern Ireland that are not intended for the Republic.

The other sticking point of the ECJ’s role in Northern Ireland to solve disputes looks set to remain, though a compromise could be included as part of the new deal.

Speaking yesterday, Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab said the reduction in trade red tape would lead to a “substantial scaling back” of the role of the ECJ.

But he refused to rule out the court having a say on future legal cases, which could prove to be a flashpoint for DUP resistance.

VAT rates, taxes and state aid policy could be set by Westminster rather than Brussels as part of the new deal.

This seems like an eminently sensible agreement that undoes some of the mess left by Johnson. Very far from perfect and far from what we had inside the EU, but hopefully indicates that the grownups are back in charge of the UK/EU relationship.

And another example of cordial relations going forward:

More chance of Everton qualifying for Europe. Possible, but highly improbable...

Scientific endeavour should always be free of borders and given it’s one of the things that we do well, this is good.
