Current Affairs Irish Border and Brexit

Whilst it’s seems kinda obvious to a lot of us over the sea, will meet some inevitable and possibly violent resistance I’d imagine. I dunno what the mood is like in NI. Think we have a few Northern Irish posters who wouldn’t be happy at all with this outcome.
While preferring to stay in the EU, the deal as it stands is the best case scenario for Ireland.

Brexit has focussed minds on reunification with a renewed push for detailing what it will look like in reality. The DUP have definitely dropped a clanger with their miss-reading of public opinion in NI.

Unionists will of course still oppose reunification but these are different times demographically and politically with Brexit about to deliver a live example of how the island can function as one distinct from London.

I havnt got a dog in the fight, and wont pretend to know the detailed history, so my question may seem a bit trite. But we are a football forum afterall.

So, if the Island became Ireland, Northern Ireland football team would go I suppose?

Yeah it would but picking an all-Ireland 11 is already a frequent pub chat. Well pre-Covid...

Rugby is the obvious example of one team for the country.

Do you have many unionist mates who are steadfast against? You think things go turn sour if a unified Ireland seems likely?
My Unionist mates who I talk politics with would prefer for the North to remain within the U.K. but see unification as inevitable.

There will always be a reaction of sorts in NI to even the most minor of things but do I see widespread trouble? No as there just isn’t the same conditions as before to both spark and sustain it.

Brexit has demonstrated to Unionists that London actually doesn’t view Belfast as being the same as London. With that realisation, it is hoped Unionists engage with the many civic forums that are discussing how all traditions and heritage can be accommodated within a shared future.

If the hearts and minds can be won over with actual facts and assurances pre-referendums then we will hopefully avoid the messy type of affair that Brexit has turned into.

It's obviously a very thorny issue.
It might not, I can see a situation where NI remains a semi autonomous region but instead of being part of the UK, it would be part of Ireland/EU.
In that case it could retain it's team and league.
There is a lot of pride in the history of the IFA (northern Ireland). The FAI actually split from the IFA, not the other way around.
The only way it could work is if both associations were ended and a new one started.
That would mean one league structure, which would probably half the amount of European spots (2 leagues becoming 1).
There would also be huge sectarian problems with combining the leagues.
Though, I have to say, before I emigrated. I was a Season ticket holder at my local league of Ireland club.
We took part (and won :) ) an inter league/country competition called the Setanta cup.
I went to the Linfield away game at Windsor park. The Linfield fans took us to the Linfield/Rangers supporters club bar on the Shankill road. Somewhere, as a southern Catholic, I never thought I'd be. The fans were great, very hospitable, we bonded over our hatred of Dundalk! Definitely gave me a new perspective of 'The other side'.
In summary, it's a long shot, a lot has to happen, both teams would have to be absolved and replaced with one... And I'd love to see it!

Don't worry, when things get really bad, we'll just rule you from Dublin. You can still call it the UK if you like.
Thanks, as long as we all get to vote in the government and create our own laws I don’t care where it’s based or what it’s called......
