There goes the whole ‘the UK doesn’t want a hard border’ schtick.
Who in gods name would they get to work in these posts??

There is method in the madness of this new “plan”.

They are suggesting moving the customs posts miles back from the border itself.

For example......they could put one in Banbridge instead of Newry.

Coleraine instead of Derry.

Bessbrook instead of Crossmaglen.

Kilkeel instead of Warrenpoint.

Newtonstewart instead of Strabane.

Tandragee instead of Middletown.

Augher instead of Aughnacloy.

etc., etc.

The advantage for them would be the border checks in unionist towns manned by loyal Ulstermen living locally.......and all in close proximity to British Army garrisons.

See what I mean, Ruari?

I posted on here before that as the clock runs down on unionism in Ireland and the numbers stacked against it, re-partition would rear its ugly head.

Gentlemen, this is the first step in that masterplan :)

Is Johnson taking the piss ??? Alternative to the backstop ?? Really ??

UK proposes customs posts on both sides of border in bid to replace backstop

'The UK has proposed the creation of a string of customs posts along both sides of the Irish border as part of its effort to replace the backstop, RTÉ News understands. The ideas, which would be highly controversial, are contained in proposals sent from London to the European Union - extracts of which have been seen by RTÉ News. The proposals would effectively mean customs posts being erected on both sides of the border, but located perhaps five to ten miles 'back' from the actual land frontier. This is because under British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, the UK is insisting that Northern Ireland remain completely outside the EU’s customs union for industrial goods and agri-food products.

Even more controversial is a proposal that the goods moving from a so-called "customs clearance site" on the northern side of the border to a similar site on the southern side would be monitored in real time using GPS via mobile phone data, or tracking devices placed on trucks or vans.
The ideas are contained in one of four so-called 'non-papers' submitted by UK officials during recent technical discussions in Brussels.
Under the British proposals, both the UK and EU would create what are believed to be called "customs clearance sites", but to all intents and purposes a customs post.'

.......so effectively the installation of a hard border on both sides is Johnson's "alternative" to the backstop. Whatever happened to the lie that "the UK will have no border checks ?? "

This has already been laughed out of town by the opposition parties as it shortly will be by the government and the EU.

Proof it was ever needed that Johnson has been bluffing about wanting a deal and trying his utmost to enforce a hard Brexit. What a cad.
I honestly can’t decide if the idea of multiple border checks is U.K. misunderstanding of reality (again) or is it just a flippant proposal to convince Brexiteers that they tried but were thwarted by the big bad EU.

It is so he can can say “look Arlene, love....I tried my best but the buggers won’t play ball with me. They are adamant about the Backstop over in your bailiwick and as I have no intention of dying in s ditch......”......:(

Tbh least it is the first sign of realism. When these plans get out everyone will be aware of what was always going to have to happen to be able to leave the EU. And even then this proposal still doesn't deal with movement of people and thus having greater security checks between GB and NI.

Hopefully a few people on here will eat their words when it came to the fanciful technology will solve it ideas.

I want to know what would happen in this scenario, a truck full of goods from the Republic stops a couple of miles inside NI but before the customs checks, then a UK truck comes down and never leaves NI, picks up the goods and heads back up to Belfast etc. Does it still have to be checked? And if it does which I'd imagine it would have to be then doesn't this just mean that the NI border has just been redrawn and effectively everything south/west of the customs check is actually now part of the ROI.

Re-partition :)

It's both Ard Mhacha.

Only Johnson the Joker and his cohorts could come with a solution the border issue which entails having 2 hard borders instead of one, both 5 miles away from the real one. It is bluffing of the highest order as he would have known this would be rejected out of hand. Then as you say he will claim that he produced a solution but the EU and Irish government said no. They haven't a clue AND they are playing the blame game.

Laughable if the consequences weren't so profound. Westminster stopping him and/or a referendum is our only hope.
