DUP signals possible compromise to facilitate Brexit deal
Special arrangements leaving North within UK may be acceptable, says Arlene Fosterwww.irishtimes.com
Asked if Northern Ireland-specific solutions were possible if they did not affect the constitutional position of the North, Ms Foster said: “Well, I hope so, because what we want to see working . . . I think what we want to see is a recognition that we are on an island. We do recognise the unique history and geography, but we also have to recognise that we are in the United Kingdom.”
In short.....Mrs. Foster finally acknowledging that Northern Ireland is way different to Northern England.....![]()
Is there much shift in their position? It looks from that the kind of checks they'll agree to are to do with agri-products, and they're putting some lipstick on the Stormont Lock.![]()

The DUP are built on the bedrock of Thatcher’s sentiment of NI being as British as Finchley. They have refused to ever countenance looking South and instead gaze lovingly at the Mothership in London. Is there much shift in their position? Stand to be corrected by the resident north of Ireland experts.
The DUP are built on the bedrock of Thatcher’s sentiment of NI being as British as Finchley. They have refused to ever countenance looking South and instead gaze lovingly at the Mothership in London.
From day one of Brexit they have constantly talked about the U.K. delivering the best outcome for Ulster and moving forward as a nation. They have castigated Varadkar for highlighting the importance of a deal by labelling it as megaphone diplomacy (ironic for the NEVER, NEVER, NEVER party).
To now be publicly saying that NI is an exceptional area and that they hope for a deal on cross border agri commerce is the start of the climb down. Notably that the initial statement is directed at the farming community who have been very vocal this week regarding a ‘disastrous no deal’.
The DUP are in panic mode and are trying to control the narrative of them backtracking on their very being by recognising the need to co-operate with the South. They need help with the wording of how this will all pan out because it will be nigh on impossible to gloss over this debacle with any sense of credibility.
The best bit of it all is that they have talked themselves out of a position of strength as the kingmaker for the Tories to now being boxed into a very bleak corner of their own making.

I think it will be very very close to the May backstop but with some form of wording, likely to be that it will be reviewed in x years to remove Unionist fears of permanent alignment.Do you think there's more to come and there'll be total capitulation and a revisit of the early May deal accepting complete regulatory alignment torpedoed by them 18 months ago?

It is exactly that Khal. They have marched their supporters up the hill and they alone do not have the words to lead them down again without looking clueless. Is it just the cynic in me thinks this is the DUP spinning in advance of the NI Backstop by having this fellow, a DUP and UFU stalwart, retract his earlier views on Brexit as a way of preparing the base for the U turn?
(BTW....I don’t think the DUP base needs much convincing. They instinctively know No Deal Brexit is a total disaster for 6 of 9)
