Interesting Article - Martinez + Moyes

It's absolutely spot on. Moyes was great for 6 or 7 years but for the final few seasons he was what was holding us back.

Neville Southall said it perfectly at the Blue Union meeting during the summer. "You've all been made to think finishing 6th or 7th is great. Is it [Poor language removed]. We're heavyweights, we should be up there fighting with the other heavyweights."

The whole club, the players and a lot of the supporters, just began to accept and languish in the "plucky, little Everton tag." Never won anything, never qualified for anything, never had any belief they could beat the best. Moyes, despite everything he did for us, was largely responsible for that. The way we flopped or bottled it in big games was just unforgivable for a team with so much talent. What sort of manager goes into a big away game and says "we don't expect to win here today." What message does that send out? If I was a player I'd just pack my stuff up and go home before the game even starts, what's the point me playing if I won't get anything?

Martinez has swept away the negativity and so have the players by embracing his methods and mentality. We play better football, have a better team and are having a somewhat better season. I flapped it when Moyes left in the summer because he's the only Everton manager I've ever known and part of me, sadly I admit, had a bit of the fear that we'd fall apart without him, just as all the football media were harping on that we would. What a load of crap that turned out to be, we've improved without him! All because we've been allowed to play positively and players allowed to be adventurous. That increases confidence which in turn increases desire to succeed, not settle for being 'nearly men'. Viva La Roberto!

Build em up and then kick em while they're down.

It's nothing but an attack on Moyes. Just using us and Roberto's genius as a stick to beat him with.

And I like it.

I agree with you. I still think Moyes did very well with the budget available. If we don't sell Fellaini and Anichebe for a massive amount of money this summer, I 've no idea what our league position would be today, to be fair.

I think the main problem with/for moyes was how long he was here and how long he was fighting with No money. Don't forget he started off very positive, said the same things as RM in regards to having to do it a different way etc. He did do it tbf he got us in the CL, he also got us on the cusp of the top 4, most years we were always best of the rest!

I honestly think he just got tired of trying to do it. He slipped into a mentality of believing it couldn't be done without money. He got stuck in a rutt, and believed the grass was greener! He also didn't know how to build different teams, all his teams were very simlar, they were always improving on the last one but always in a moyes style.

A few years back you could just see the change in him. The fire went from his belly! As I said he gave up when all he needed to do was take a whole fresh approach, a change of style, anything that got the fire back in the belly.

Don't forget the core of this club and team was built by moyes.....he's not all bad.
And utd are screwing him over big time to boot!

I honestly believe that if it weren't for Citeh spunking dough, and to a lesser extent spurs, I honestly think Moyes would have got us in the top 4 AGAIN.

I think those 2 factors, plus the cup final defeat dented Moyes' belief in what he could achieve at Everton, and that's when some of our fans began to turn on him, with the final straw for many being the 'knife to a gunfight' comment.

What is clear is he had a strategy of talking down the club in order to accentuate his own achievements, all with the long term goal of being the Johnny onthe spot once Siralex croaked.he did do a good job in those first 3/4 years, and he left us with a great defence. He was though, about to ruin Barkley.
What I can't forgive him for is his pitch as a man of integrity, wanting to do things right, and resenting how money was distorting everything.then,as soon as he gets to United, he tried to get out two best players for 20m under their actual price. I still can't believe it, he takes over the richest club in the world, and tries to steal from the club who made him a multi millionaire.then you look at the fact he's loaded his entire family into the footy business, how many were on the Everton payroll? A mediocre greedy hypocrite.

Good post Kev...I agree with everything you say

Have to agree.

It's all good having a go at Moyes, but it was never a case of what he did or what he could do...it was always a case of taking the next step. He clearly hit a wall with us over the past 2 seasons and couldn't

Money will get you into that top 4. I'll be amazed if we get it. Stunned even. But if we don't we're technically back to where we started albeit playing wonderful football.

Martinez is pure positive energy around the place. But it'll have ups and downs and struggles. If a team who have spent millions and have a big squad have them, don't expect a team like us not to get them along the way.

The big difference is the belief that we could win a goblet. Which is all that I want and most fans want. With Moyes you were never 100% as the money factor always hung over us. Getting done 2-1 in an FA Cup final by world class players on the park like Drogba, Lampard etc against Tony Hibbert and Phil Neville is always was always met with a shrug of the shoulders and a "well, if we had spent x on x then we would've had that extra"

But with Martinez, he's got the players and fans thinking they can beat anyone. And that might just get us over the line than spending £20million on a Spanish striker who only scores penalties (for eg).

Moyes is STILL at it at his new charges.. talking down expectations... "I don't think we can get the players in January to make at difference." etc. Same old bull$1it.

Looks like Martinez has had the meeting with Bill.

"Hi roberto come in and sit down, you know the money you made in August and I said it's yours to spend, well it's like this and I'm sure you will see the funny side but it's gone. You know what it's like with those darn opperating costs.
Just one more thing roberto, you couldn't pretend it's all your idea not to spend it, could you, please."

Reberto leaves room and calls Mr Whelan.

"Hi Dave, Roberto here. How's the leg?"

'I always believe that to achieve things you don't need money,' he said. 'There are other ways to be successful, but you need time. A large chequebook just enables you to accelerate the process. In football, you can compete against anyone if you are tactical, flexible, creative and have time to build.'

This is why Martinez is what he is. Awesome
