Interesting Article - Martinez + Moyes

Man Utd should be higher up in the table but that team is a mess. In Moyes defense he knew what was wrong with the club and tried to get Fabergas (what they really needed) and RVP is back to his old injured ways. Plus SAFs/front office signings were for the most part a collasal failure. Ashley Young for 24M anyone, or how about a 20M Phil Jones?

Last season I said to myself as Wigan was trouncing us, its funny he's built a squad that would be perfect for Martinez system. So credit to him for getting those players.

I also think we would have easily finished 4th if only Jelavic was say 75% of the player he was the season before (also in the 1st few games he was playing alright and we played some nice stuff with Moyes in charge). Granted no one thought he'd be bagging a goal a match but his decline in form was shocking and it was at the one position we were thin at. No one in their right mind thought Jelavic was going to be that bad.

I bumped into a guy today who scouts for Mick Doherty (the guy who spotted Coleman) and he said that the staff at Finch Farm are so much happier now that Moyes has left and that there is a totally different vibe about the place these days.

The same Mick Doherty who left Everton to work for Chelsea a couple of years ago. And who now works for Manchester United after jumping at the chance to work with the hated David Moyes again?

Moyes was a fraud and liar for saying Everton couldn't realistically challenge for the title on his budget.

Because the following teams have challenged for the title on similar money to Everton..........erm?

Everton have finished 6th, 5th, 5th, 8th, 7th, 7th, 6th in the last 7 seasons. Of those 7 seasons the only teams to have finished above us are:
Manchester United x 7
Arsenal x 7
Chelsea x 7

So the only teams to finish above us every year are those who spend approximately 100m a year more.

Tottenham x 5
Liverpool x 5
Manchester City x 4

The next group have finished above us more seasons than not. City joined this group when they spent £1b in 5 years. Liverpool and Tottenham have spent roughly £400m more than us on transfers and wages over these 7 years.

Newcastle x 1
Aston Villa x 1
The only other teams to finish above us at all in the last 7 years. Villa in a season where they spent £90m on wages and £60-70m on fees and Newcastle on a similar budget to us.

If someone can give me an example of a single club who has challenged for the league since the mid 1990's on a small budget in the Premier League then I'll accept money is not a factor.

Unfortunately for your argument here, the article never mentioned about winning the title, it's point was we never sustained any challenege to the financial elite. As the article started off talking about the 'boast' to get CL football, it seems fair to assume CL spots was what the author had in mind.

According to LinkedIn Mick is still at Chelsea. Anyway, I said it was the scout's observation, not Mick's, so it doesn't make any difference whether he's gone to United or not.

I don't think the article suggests money isn't a factor. Instead, I understand it to suggest the opposite: money is not the only factor. Even I know about the fortunes unsuccessfully spent by Leeds, Blackburn, and Portsmouth.

Not saying it's not well written, just it's a bit pointless. Not sure WHY is being reported, that's what I mean.

Given that Moyes' United just got bounced out of the cup with its fifth home loss of the season while we beat QPR like they owed us money and have lost just two league games all year, the timing is logical. And as the writer points out, the financial situation at Everton hasn't changed, yet the club seems to be energized with a more positive belief in itself, whereas the financial situation has most definitely changed for Moyes and he's being shown up for his limitations as a manager.

What is clear is he had a strategy of talking down the club in order to accentuate his own achievements, all with the long term goal of being the Johnny onthe spot once Siralex croaked.he did do a good job in those first 3/4 years, and he left us with a great defence. He was though, about to ruin Barkley.
What I can't forgive him for is his pitch as a man of integrity, wanting to do things right, and resenting how money was distorting everything.then,as soon as he gets to United, he tried to get out two best players for 20m under their actual price. I still can't believe it, he takes over the richest club in the world, and tries to steal from the club who made him a multi millionaire.then you look at the fact he's loaded his entire family into the footy business, how many were on the Everton payroll? A mediocre greedy hypocrite.

In some ways I think notwithstanding winning the PL last season many of their players are very good but overrated so in some respects our EX may have been handed a poisoned chalice. Hoever I think there is no doubt that he should have done better and in many ways must take the resposibilty for the poor esults there. By contrast Roberto has taken to Everton like a duck to water and has immediately commanded the respect of the players, not a single rumour of discontent from the players as far as I am aware. Most importantly at this stage he has the fans with him and long may it continue, don't think there has been such a blast through our club since Howard Kendall.

Come to the conclusion some Evertonians egos are bigger than their love of the club Martinez has nailed all the bollocks Moyes brainwashed in and been the perfect antidote to the turgid time predicted.

Moyes was as arrogant and dismissive as expected when he left and most fans have seen the light but some still can't and I don't think ever will, sad really.

Interesting this sort of story getting printed now the sacred cow of ManU is being threatened, the dullard Moyes skipping in making mistake after mistake won't be allowed to affect long term circulation they'll either chase him or push for SAF to come back in as "advisor" (fnarrr)

It's nice to see, but its wise to take everything with a pinch of salt. The Martinez regime isn't the 2nd coming YET - it will be if and when we win some silverware. Likewise the Moyes regime was as doom and gloom as some are remembering.
